Who uses super thick picks to good effect?

I originally thought that thicker picks would be the way to go. I've been playing primarily fingetstyle most of these some 15 years, and I wanted to get as far from that sound as possible. The conclusion I have come to is that while a wide selection of the picking bass brethren makes awesome use of the thicker picks, I myself may have to stick to the 1mm 'tort' (lol) Geipels that feel right and give me what I need tonally.

Cracked the two fatter corners, so started using the tip yesterday & it just flew off a bit ago :smug:

OK, I just tried out some 3, 4 and 6mm picks. I get it. The sound is different. However, when I rest the pick on the string before a note, because that's what I do in certain circumstances, there's a lot of handling noise. Maybe that slop is fine once everyone else is playing.

It seems you may need to limit your pick hand movement.
Only move as much as needed to move the string.

Well, after setting in with Dunlop Nylon 0.88mm for decades, this thread got me curious...

The shop I bought my last bass from threw in a pack of Dunlop Ultex 1.4mm picks (plus spare set if strings, etc) with the shipment so I cracked the packet open last practice and tried them out.

I did like the more aggressive attack and what it produced, even though I went back to the familiar 0.88mm after a while. Definitely has me curious about what they may produce for me once I'm more comfortable with them.

I picked up a pack of the Clayton 1.90 triangle picks, they don’t seem to wear at all. I have some of those fat stubbies around here that I didn’t like for 6 string, but I can’t find them, and I did break the tip off one of them, so I’m not in a big hurry to find them.

Different people different strokes (and picks).
I prefer relatively thin ones as well.
Dunlop USA Nylon .73mm for playing bass and .60 for guitar.

Don't understand how people can do soft up and down strokes or not getting stuck on the strings when needing to play aggressively with something like a 2mm pick.
I feel like I have much more control and dynamical range with a thinner pick.
The trick is to hold it between your fingers close to the tip and only use the absolute tip of it.

I'd say if you prefer thinner picks and feel like you play best with those no reason whatsoever to swap to thicker ones if it's just for the reason of attempting to get to understand why some people prefer those.
It's not exactly a big mystery, people just happens to have different preferences and slightly different picking techniques.

I'm about 90% finger style, but when using a pick I don't like 'em too thick. I like the Jim Dunlop nylon .88mm, but I turn it around so I'm using one of the rounded "corners" rather than the point. I've also used a Dunlop Tortex 1mm, which was OK. I don't think I'd go any heavier than that.

Wifey rode along with me on a trip to Elderly Instruments once. Back at home she surprised me with a (left-handed) [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] that she bought there.

Immediately I went head-over-heels for the Wegen, right up until I discovered they are $15.00(!!) each. After finding that out I never used it again (still have it though), because I didn't want to become dependent on fifteen-buck picks.

I just got a small bag of those Dunlop Primetone 5 mm thick picks today, and other than not realizing that they were smaller in size than my usual Max Grips in the trad shape, I am digging them in a major way. I just need to find the right size and I think I will be switching over to them. Don't think they're going to fit in my mic stand pick holder, but I feel like I can totally fly with these picks!
