My local one is closing shop. I’m kind of bummed about it. I’ve been shopping there since my daughter was born and shopped there the last two Christmas’s for my son. Buying toys for kids online really sucks because you don’t get an idea of the scale or quality most times. I’d much rather do it in store. Toy shopping for a little boy for the next 10 years is going to suck with Target and Walmart being my only other options besides the niche mom&pops at this point and their selections aren’t the greatest near me. Christmas and b-days just got more stressful....yay.

By the way, I hate Toys R Us. Not a fun experience...terrible environment, crying babies everywhere.

The Markets React:

Bankrupt retailer Toys "R" Us may shut all its US stores as soon as next week, according to several reports.

That's terrible news for the two biggest publicly traded toy companies. Investors are clearly preparing for the worst. Shares of Hasbro (HAS) fell 3.5% Friday morning while Mattel (MAT)plunged 7%.

Smaller toy company Jakks Pacific (JAKK) fell nearly 5% too. Canada's Spin Master, which owns the popular line of Hatchimals toys, was down about 3% as well on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

Toys 'R' Us could go out of business next week. That's bad news for Lego and Barbie

Hmmm.... Vaguely familiar....

Toys “R” Us’s $583 million of first-lien bonds due in 2021 dropped as much as 4 cents on the dollar to 83.9, according to bond-pricing system known as Trace. That’s the biggest decline since September, the month the company filed for bankruptcy.

The downfall of Toys “R” Us can be traced back to a $7.5 billion leveraged buyout in 2005, when Bain Capital, KKR & Co. and Invalid Link Removed loaded the company with debt. For years, the retailer was able to refinance its debt and delay a reckoning. But the emergence of online competitors, like Amazon.com Inc., weighed on results. The company’s massive interest payments also sucked up resources that could have gone toward technology and improving operations.

Amazon will take care of it. They have everything. I love Prime.

Having the postman bring something to the door was a rare treat as a kid, but a thrill nonetheless.

But walking into a Toys R Us as a kid was a whole different level of pleasure -- very Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory
to look at at that giant showroom of toys. Ah, endless possibility....

naw, no warm and fuzzies for Toyz R Us. My play palace dreams came from Child World (r.i.p.) At one point, I even got a job at our local one during the christmas rush. Talk about insane. I don't really remember doing much there.

Child World was an American chain of toy stores that was founded in Avon, Massachusetts, in 1970 by Sid Shneider and Joseph Arnesano.[1] Child World once boasted 182 stores and revenues of approximately $830 million annually. From 1975 until its closure Child World also operated the Children's Palace chain of stores after acquiring it from Kobacker Stores, and later incorporated most of the aesthetic design features from the latter chain into Child World stores.

What's that mean for our local toy manufacturing giant Kenner.
Oh wait, I clean forgot they folded a quarter century ago.
Cincinnati sure dodged a bullet on this one.

That’s an experience that will be very sad to see go. While I’m perfectly happy buying most anything online, as I learned this last year, children’s toys is not one of them. I’m sad that my son won’t get to have that experience of walking into a TRU anytime soon. It’s something a kid doesn’t forget the first time. I remember the first times my parents brought me to TRU and FAO Schwarz.

i have grandkids for whom i buy toys. toys R us has always been a choice, but not my main source of vicarious childhood. there are specialty stores where i live. IMO: the online stuff/choices can be 'unique' compared to the big box.

but thanks, Son of Wobble for bringing us all down with such sad news (except Gorn , who has no child left in him).
