At our gig last weekend, the whole band had to go direct due to a restriction on the bar's entertainment license - no backline amps. It sounded great. We were using a couple Mackie SR1530 mains and a JBL PRX518S sub. The drummer used his electronic kit, meaning the sound man could get the mix just right across the board (sorry).
Anyway, I used my Eden WTDI for input but, interestingly, I ended up bypassing it for most of the gig. I was playing my Sadowsky UV-70 with Pope Flex Core preamp and my new LeCompte VB5 with Aguilar OBP-3. The EQ possibilities on both of those basses are so fantastic that there's no need for any EQ on the floor. Next time we have to do that, I'm just going with a Radial J48.
Anyway, we were very happy with our sound. I just ran the output from the board to the sub with its on-board crossover engaged, and sent the mids and highs to the Mackies. The drummer likes the sub to be next to him, and it ended up about 10 feet behind the mains. I took a chance and reversed the polarity of the sub, and it worked out bitchen. I didn't hear any obvious phase issues out front.
Tonight my acoustic trio will be playing a largish coffee house. I usually go direct in that group, but we'll be in the house PA (JBL EON15s), and my bass (Fodera Emperor) sounds rancid through them, so I'll be taking my AE210 and maybe my new MB200 for the bottom end. It's going to be our first gig singing through Shure Super 55s. We've been using Beta 58As, which have the same capsule.
