Who is your favorite jazz bassplayer?

Her is my list:
1. Gary Willis (the master, non above non beside)
2. Jaco Pastorius (the best that ever was)
3. Sean Melone (Mr. tecnique)
4. Jeff Berlin
5. John Patitucci
6.

In terms of tone my list would be very
similar. Who have I forgotten?

That's a pretty closed minded way of thinking there, Crypton. And, I would go so far as to say that Gary Willis doesn't even play jazz. If anything, he's a fusion guy.

Ah a reply from my old friend bassmonkeee, sorry about last time.
Perhaps a little narrov minded, but if I extend the group to cover jazz/prog rock(metal) the statment should be a little moore acurate. The truth is that I have never heard anyone as good as a "jazz" bassplayer. If you can prove me worng please do:). Fusion is moore jazz than it is anything else, hence It is commonly labeld jazz.

Heh--I had to do a search on your posts to see what you were talking about.

I still think "kissmya$$.com" was one of my better responses in recent months. :D

I'm certainly not one to argue anything as subjective as "best" when it comes to players since there aren't any tests that I'm aware all of the big shots have taken.

But, I think David Benyahia has provided a great list of people who are considered the cream of the crop by quite a few players.

I was looking through some Pat Metheny stuff in an HMV on Sunday and found "One Quiet Night" (solo baritone guitar CD my friend's been raving about for ages) and a Pat Metheny Group with Richard Bona singing. I looked at the two, and it seriously took a little while to come up with a decision -- I took home One Quiet Night, since Mr. Bona wasn't playing bass.

That said, I'm a huge fan of the following:

Charles Mingus
Christian McBride
Ray Brown
Jaco
Stanley Clarke
Marcus Miller

If we're doing the fusion guys too, I'll toss in another vote for Mista Victa.
