Why are old Peaveys so cheap?

Most of the opinions about Peavey being great bang for the buck and just great instruments in general is true...but man, the way some people defend Peavey, you would of thought you peed on their grandma!

It's because the accusations are so wildly separated from reality that you can't let it stand. I mean, what if people started claiming that Tom Clement basses are unreliable junk, based entirely on the fact that his prices are lower than other boutique builders. The reasoning behind the claim is borderline insane, so it would be irresistible for those who know better to pipe in with the facts.

Look through this thread. You'll see people claim they're "unreliable" or "junk", etc. One person actually claimed they (Peavey) were a budget amp brand that was trying to make basses, and that "it just can't work". Huh??? Peavey has been a major manufacturer of guitars for over 30 years. Where has this guy been??? These claims are crazy!

Old Peaveys were cheap when they were new... so... why Peavey would sell his basses so cheap if they are top quality basses like some players say? "Made in usa" dont mean nothing... Top of the line Yamaha´s and some Ken Smiths are made in Japan

From day one, Peavey's business model has been to put the most in your hands for the least money. It's up to the buyer to understand value over marketing image. But I suppose that's too much to ask.

I have no idea what "made in the usa don't mean nothing" is supposed to mean in relation to this topic.

Yeah this is an obvious troll thread. Sounds like someone down in buenos aires is a bit envious of the great used gear bargains we have up here in The States. Don't cry for us argentina, we're pretty happy about it.

Story: My dad never owned a bass amp. He always played his bass through a Peavey PA head (with a Kustom speaker cab). To be honest, he sounded pretty good through that. So did I, for the short time I used it.

No Peavey hate here...

Because you believe ANYTHING made in usa is better than anything that dont.. in this case.. the medium level old peavey basses..

What on earth are you talking about? Is someone playing a practical joke on you by incorrectly translating your words? Because I can't believe you actually mean to say the stupid things you're saying here.

I don't know if this is the case, but....

Peavey innovated guitar building with the use of CNC machining - streamlining production & saving time with near perfect repeatability... This might have been how Peavey was able to produce good quality for less $$... When other manufacturers adopted CNC techniques, it was good for their bottom line, but didn't mean they needed to drop their already higher prices...

I'm not a Peavey fanboy, but own a T-40 & a B-Quad (both very capable basses) - I've eyeballed a few others & wouldn't mind a TL-5 or USA Cirrus...

I also have a Peavy combo amp from the early 90's - nothing special in the sound department & I haven't used it in years, but built like a tank.

Not sure why folks get caught up in price or country of origin - everybody knows the best basses are made in Germany & cost over 10K :)

Do you work for Peavey? If anybody think Peavey is not reliable or junk...why you worry that much? let people think what they want... nobody will change his opinion because your super intelligent response...just leave it..

I'd just like to point out that my friend here ^^ has decided not to elaborate.

See, this is the thing about Peavey detractors. Someone told them at some time that Peavey gear was "junk", and they just swallowed that nonsense whole without giving it a second thought. I've found this to be the case with most who don't like Peavey basses. They can't or won't explain why, but they have no problem at all spreading the false word.

On one level this is fine with me. I've gotten insane deals on Peavey basses. A rare black Fury with a black fretboard WITH a factory hardshell case for $129! Let me tell you, I was walking on air after that one. Almost as good as picking up a US Millennium in the uncommon J/J pickup configuration for $179. Or a mint late-80's Foundation with the original hardshell case for $150. This is just plain crazy awesome! But on the other hand, I see people slag Peavey and I think - This is completely absurd. These people don't know what they're talking about!

When I first started playing bass I was told they were junk also. So I avoided them for years. However when I truly discovered how great US Peavey basses were, well I kick myself for not getting one sooner!! I have owned three Peavey's, US KOA Dyna Unity bass (had to seek to make rent four years ago, and looking for another) import Fury from the early 2000s and an old US Foundation. All great basses!!! Currently with out a Peavey but have been on the look out for a replacement!!!!

Oh and my dream bass, quilted maple (tiger eye?) US Cirrus 4 or 5 string!!
