Thanks, now I'm going to have nightmares about oboe solo.

This thread is ass.
First off, why the hell would anyone care if those of us who don't bring a backup don't?
If an oboe goes down in an orchestra, the show isn't going to come to a screaching hault.
I think that's worth a mention don't you?
Try playing farily agressively with a pick in a rock band in a sweat filled high energy show. You'll experience a broken string eventually. Not that that is the only thing that can go wrong. As I've said before, I saw my guitar player (who is about as anal retentive about his equipment as anyone I've ever met) lose his guitar off it's strap when the retainer failed on his strap lock. Gibson Flying V's apparently don't bounce. Broke a tuner clean off. Just one of many examples I've seen go wrong in years of gigging. Could have just as easily been my bass.
That's not really mistreating your equipment. Yeah, when I played finger style in a blues band... I can't recall ever breaking a string on stage . Certainly happens now though.
And instead of cherry picking one instrument to discourage that thinking, how about you take a look at the other 25 who don't bring backups?
You know another reason why nobody left? Because if I'm going to see a show, I'm taking into consideration the fact that **** goes wrong. Anyone who isn't laid back enough to relax when a dude has an issue on stage is the real "unprofessional prick". Especially if you're a musician and know the work it takes.
I've got an idea...how about you just do what you want to do, and knock off your annoying and unsolicited value judgments about everything other musicians do? Sheesh...bass players are really starting to suck. How old are you guys? 15?
BTW, this doesn't apply to everyone...just the ones casting value judgments and throwing around the U word.

Savit, I wasn't referring to you. I thought you were one of the less strident about it. I agree, you shared your experiences and said why you do what you do. I don't recall you calling anyone unprofessional.Personaly, I don't care who does or doesn't bring a backup(unless I've just spent a bunch of money on a ticket, and a failure of some sort is affecting my viewing/listening experienceThat HAS happended before), just sharing my personal experiences, and why I bring one.

So Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
I treat a gig like any other job. I wouldn't show up to my day job unprepared.
