Why did you start playing bass?

Local neighborhood band was getting together and needed a bass player.
Dad listened when I asked(see signature below).

Bass pedals on REAL pipe organs RULE THE PLANET TOO!

I was actually studying piano and my teachers son was putting together a rock band that I wanted to be in. They didn't want keyboards and, you guessed it, all that was left was bass. All I knew about it was that it had four strings and Gene Simmons played it. However, once I got one I realized that the bass was the instrument I was meant to play! :D Even my piano teacher agreed and helped to arrange for me to take lessons from the best teacher in town (thanks Mrs. Waugh!)

Since then, what a long strange road it's been!

Honestly ??......this guy made me wanna play bass ;

He also makes me GAS for a Rickenbacker 4001 , A Dean V which I would modify to accomodate a neck pickup (coz I hate that frikkin 'metal' tone) , and a Gibson EB-3

FLCL . Check it out on Wikipedia if anyone's interested . Probably not though , it's one of those things which comes with have Animation as the greatest passion of your life ;)

I started out my musical career on trombone and later tuba, so I've always been a bass clef kinda guy. A bunch of my friends played guitar, and bass just seemed like a cooler instrument since it wasn't so annoying. I got a hell of a deal on a 1985 Ibanez Musician off of ebay, and have been playing ever since. Now I enjoy bass more because I love being able to feel the music as I create it.

I thought being in a band would be cool.

I originally started learning rythm guitar and heard the intro to "For Whom The Bell Tolls" (Metallica). Asked a mate to show it to me and complained he wasn't showing me all of it. He says "yeah I am" I counter "No, what about the scaley down thingy" and he laughs, takes the guitar off me and hands me a bass saying "You'll want one of these then".

I fell in love with playing bass after hitting that F# on the E string and feeling the reaction in my body as the amp pumped volume through me :)

My initial aspiration was to be a singer/songwriter and play guitar.

One day, at age 18, a friend of mine had just started on drums and had some guitarists to jam with but no bass. I had an Squier bass sitting around so I lied and said I knew how to play it and went over there to give it a shot.

I'll never forget that night because somehow, even though I had never played bass before and knew very little about music, I felt extremely natural and comfortable in the role. Everyone like my playing and we started jamming regularly.

It just grew from there...

I've played in jam bands, jazz ensembles, r&b groups, rock bands, and cover bands with people of all ages and all backgrounds, and had a blast doing it.

I've had such an abundance of great opportunities come my way just as a result of being a dedicated bassist.

And to think, I owe it all to my buddy on drums. Come to think of it, I should give him a call and thank him for my career!

I suppose you'd say it chose me. I was playing rhythm guitar in my high school jazz band and the bass player had to drop out a month before the end of the year. I was the only guitarist who could read music so after a crash course in reading bass clef I took over on bass. I loved it right from the start but I don't know if I'd have changed over if the circumstances were different.

It chose me... I was in my basement, hanging out with my older brother and a friend of ours. My brother started busting out some riffs on guitar, our friend grabbed some sticks... and my bro told me to grab his old bass. I was hooked. And even though I'm not that great, I'm thankful that old Squier landed in my hands!
