Why do folks have multiple basses from the same maker?

Aesthetics. I'm often in situations where wardrobe and color coordination are an issue. In those situations, it's good to have at least one darker shade, one lighter shade, same bass otherwise.

I recently bought two basses for the road, 2010 MIM Standard P's identical in every detail except one is white, the other sunburst. Great basses BTW.

For gigging players there is a very valid reason - things get lost, stolen, broken (stage hands are just above UPS some times in the gentle cares a lot scale) . When you are all over the country/world the consistency of your tools is the only control you have over your sound and ultimately your job.

For the rest of us - when you find something you like, you tend to want more of them. Since you can't do it with wives (that would cause all sorts of other problems)- what is wrong with buying 6 identical 1984 peavey foundations or 8 guild pilots or the entire Rondo catalog whatever makes you happy.

because being from the same maker doesn't mean that the basses are similar. I have three Fenders ('62 J reissue, '78 fretless P and '51 P reissue), none of which is at all like the other, other than being a bass made by Fender. Same with my two EBMMs (Stingray HH 5 and Sterling fretless 4) - completely different from each other.

If I had more disposable income I'd be having more basses. Mostly because theres a number of different color combos I really dig.

olympic white/tort guard/maple neck/black block inlays (it takes a LOT for me to not impulse buy the ones that show up in buy and sell here, seriously.)
black/rosewood board/black hardware
blue/black or tort guard/rosewood board

And I would like to have a 5 string too. As well as a passive 4 string with rounds(mine has flats). Basically things that require a major setup to change on a bass.
