Why do so many musicians get hooked on drugs, etc.?

And this still doesn't answer the question of those that don't usually take to the stage but are still musicians. A lot of the opinions in this threat are pigeon-holing all musicians as the type that plays in bands and whatnot and tour, when the world of music is MUCH bigger than just that.

Uh, I was just trying to be funny, appearantly failing. I get it tho, I'd say the same percentage of musicians that use drugs is probly about equal to that of regular folks, or, civilians if u will.

I think it's because of touring - touring is pretty boring, just lots of waiting around, and then a show. When your in a venue waiting to play with no distractions and a load of beer signs everywhere, you drink beer. And then I think the drugs thing comes when you come back from tour, and it seems like nothing is happening, and you think 'how can i spice things up?' - that's when more exotic drugs seem appealing.

I do think, though, that it's not just musicians that do a lot of drugs. Plenty of people have drug addictions - the difference is that musicians have a reputation for it because their private lives are more interesting to most people. Who tells the story about the leisure centre attendant with a cocaine addiction? Nobody, because it's boring. The thing I find funny is that a lot of the time if your a musician, people will ASSUME you do loads of drugs.

I hate that assume thing. I've been depressed lately, and my lack of sleep gives me an ever-present "stoned" look. It's not helping that I'm a bassist. I also have a "less-than-legal" rep earned from selling DVD's Alot of people think I'm a pothead. I know better than that. I know too many musicians and bands destroyed by drugs, and won't take my chances on THAT path.
