I started playing bass in 1975 after being enlisted five years prior for upright bass in the school orchestra. My deceased brother-in-law had a sister who let me practice on her rig way back then and a couple years later I turned pro*.

Growing up, the first electric guitar bands I heard (think early British invasion era) all had that low frequency thump that set them apart from anything I'd heard before (like my parent's music) and it was just magical to me. I wasn't sure exactly what it was that was making that sound, but I was immediately attracted to it.

Years later, in High School, I went to visit a friend who had a band (to paint their band name on the bass drum head) and I walked in and heard that sound... wham! That was IT for me.

My reason is much like what others here have related. When I was a kid, I usually listened to music (hard rock and metal) on poopy tape players with speakers with little bass. I knew what a bass was but didn't really know what it DID. Then I heard Kiss' s Animalize through a decent pair of speakers, and I was enthralled. That low end, the slides, the growl...that's what I wanted. And I've wanted nothing more, ever.

If you like to feel your chest buzz there is nothing quite like feeling your chest buzz from the inside out!
Lucky! I can't sing anything below a Bb. I can make a sound that is pitched at A 110, but I wouldn't really call it singing at that point. No low Es or Ds for this guy. :(

But my five-string knocks that crap out the park ;)

Because it's to late in life for me to be proficient on another instrument.
I'd dislike this post if I could! Older people are fully capable of learning! The thing that holds them back is fear.
...depends on how you vibrate their panties.
Yeah, you hit that brown note and they won't be able to get their panties off fast enough!
I could say that I play for the guys, but being the only female in my band means I'm surrounded them. Vibrations are what we're supposed to create...rock on! Lol
Meh, I'd toss some panties your way. Man panties. eh. gross. nevamind.
