Why do you play bass?

I play because it brings happiness to people and today more than ever we need happiness above all.

I’ve traveled far and wide, met lots of great people and when I see them having a good time, singing along, dancing or just tapping their feet to the groove it’s very rewarding.

When I was 8 yrs old my dad decided that I had to learn how to play an instrument because he had read that it was important for a child's developmnet and whateaver.
Now, the only instrument we could afford was a guitar, so it was classical guitar. I entered a Tango conservatory (live in Buenos Aires) and studied classical guitar, music theory, solfeggio, etc. I was specialized in what is called "concert guitar" which is mainly an endless solo. Never liked doing rythin guitar tbh, so I just did solos. I was the only woman in the group, lol the rest of the guys were all Malmsteeem wanabees getting their neo-classical training. But as years went by I didn't wanna play anymore. I started hating my guitar until I quit the conservatory and smashed my guitar into 1000 pieces (not gonna go into details now into why).

Didn't play for a few years until my late teenage years when I started hanging out with a group of friends who had a band. And when I say hanging out, I mean I was a groupie lol. I was dating the guitar player but really wanted to get the drummer, and the bass player suggested I played bass to break the ice with the drummer next reherasal, so he lent me his bass, i took it home and played it for a week and absolutely fell in love, I had found MY instrument. I had to return the bass that saturday afternoon, so that morning I went to a pawn shop, sold a gold necklace my godmother had given me years before and with the money bought my first bass. It was 1999. It's been the love of my life ever since (the bass, no the drummer, that didn't last long LOL).

I played guitar through my teens and had a cellist buddy who took up bass and we wrote music together. When I was a guitarist I always liked rhythm better, didn't care much for soloing. I always liked playing my buddy's bass guitar and secretly wished I played that instead. I took a hiatus from music for a few years and got a bass for Christmas, and I was instantly hooked. The bass is my instrument, the bass is me, and I wish I would've taken it up years ago

I play bass for the following reasons:
-I used to play the guitar [badly] but couldn't deal with the narrow string spacing. Bass 4 string is ideal.
-I love the deep sexy tones.
-I have always been more of a rhythm person than a melody. I don't even listen to lyrics.
-I like the fact that it's a relatively unexplored instrument, and therefore there is scope to discover new ways of making music.
-I like that it's tuned in 4ths and this suits my OCD and perfectionism. The askew nature of the guitar fretboard tuning was always a slight irritation.
-I like the idea more of being the power behind the throne, silently driving the music underneath, than being the centre of attention.
