Yeah, this video has been discussed here before. There's a few good points but, I think that people who care about music even just a little gave up listening to commercial radio about 2 decades ago anyway (or at least they get their music fix elsewhere). Songs on the radio are now like a commercial break between two segments of the news, nothing more.
I think he’s comparing the top selling and money earning bands of one musical era to another. So in that respect the comparison is completely valid. I don’t think it’s a case of him deliberately cherry picking at all. It’s definitely apples to apples if you go by the charts and ticket sales. And if you weigh the ticket sales heavily, you’d have to remove the Beatles. They stopped doing concerts very early on in their career.
Like my GF said when talking about how much the times have changed. In the ‘70s the women’s popular anthem was I am Woman. In the 80s it switched to Girls Want to Have Fun. And today it’s whatever Taylor Dayne is moaning about this week.

That's true for politicians, too, at least the ones that start in local gov't. As they move up the chain they become more and more beholden to social institutions and entities (and a few individuals) who have helped them and who can help them in the future. Advice, money, marketing, whatever. If you want to know why some elected official seems to be serving a party or an industry or a "special interest" to the detriment of common sense (whatever you think that is) you need only see whose support that person gets. The politicians everybody really hates are the ones that have embraced this transformation--these also happen to be the effective ones. Effective record companies turn out hits, is what I am getting at. If white noise is the market, white noise is what you should get. There will be a "white noise" pedal for your bass coming out any day now!
I though maybe a pornstar. which would be one of those exaggerations that tries to make a point but overdoes it.
Every decade, and every generation has music that sucks, and good music. I'll agree the good stuff is harder to find now, but it's out there. It's easy to sit back and condemn modern music, remember our parents did that about our music.
If you listen to radio stations that advertise the newest hippest music- It'll suck...big.
Now scour you-tube, and look at the suggested vids down the right hand side. Lots of good stuff in every genre.
Whatever you do- DO NOT watch the grammy awards- You will walk away hating music. Jeezus, the crap that gets the nod from the public at large will make you toss your burrito.

Many of the “great” bands/artists of yesteryear didn’t chart well—with exceptions, of course.
Look back at a list of song/album of the year Grammy winners—it’s a joke.

Why does modern pop music suck?
Easiest to market, easiest to sell to lowest (least sophisticated) common denominator.
Long story short, its about money and not music.
This gives me a chance to praise outfits like "Post Modern Jukebox" who reverse engineer those ubiquitous pop tunes and put back the sophistication and soul that was intentionally avoided by the original producers.

Its WAY easier to find good music now. Pop has always mostly sucked other than a few gems each year. Post-grunge was the worst era of music I lived through. The record companies still controlled everything and thought we all wanted saccharine hookless soft rock.

Qualatative discussion aside, I think it is fair to say that music has become increasingly "visual" (MTV, VH1, BET, Idol, youtube, etc.) in the last 35 years. I believe this "visual" component changes how people make and listen to music.
