Why don't we have that yet?

So I was writing a song about being disappointed with how my life had turned out and decided it wasn't that great of a song.

I was going to throw the whole thing out. But I decided I liked the first verse well enough. And after thinking, I realized that that verse would be excellent if the song was in stead about us not having the cool future goodies that pop culture promised we'd have by now.

So I need ideas for cool future goodies that we should have by now, but they somehow insist on remaining impossible.

Here is what I've kept from the song, followed by part of a maybe verse along the lines of what I'm asking y'all for:

I never really got to do
the things I always wanted to
When I was just a kid I thought
the things they said were mostly true
like I could be an astronaut
or President, instead I got
to get to work and pay my dues
and do the things they tell me to
Days pile up and years go by.
Now I'm old and don't know why
This isn't how I thought my life would be

By now we should have flying cars
and people living up on Mars
robot butlers, time machines
and cures for almost everything

Life truths suck. :(

Good lyrics.

I wrote some lyrics about some personal experiences a few years back, sounded really emo, so never used them. Looking back at them, I was describing bipolar disorder down to a T!

I totally understand. The first version of this turned into a long bloviating whine about how I wish my old band had made it big. It was A.) Lame, and B.) Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too autobiographical.

Part of the thrown away crap part:

I used to play my bass guitar
in lots of dark and smoky bars
People danced and drank their beers
And after we played they would cheer.
But audiences go away
Now I never get to play
Except at home, all by myself
Or sometimes with a friend. That helps.
Mostly I just work and sleep.
But sometimes I still stop and think
This isn't how I thought my life would be.

We were all going to be rock stars
With the bands name up in lights
Platinum albums on all my walls
And a party every night
But musicians often flake out
Maybe die or go to jail
Two of mine now live in Dallas
But the rest are doing well

The first thing I thought about jetpacks is that the few seconds that we've seen them fly on TV shows is just about the entire time that one is capable of flight. I think the most capable one made yet, with a full tank of fuel, flew for something like 25 seconds. Cars are still using gasoline. And our great great grandkids will be paying off the governments debt from our era. What happened to things like Star Trek, where they don't use a currency system anymore?

I never really got to do
the things I always wanted to
When I was just a kid I thought
the things they said were mostly true
like I could be an astronaut
or President, instead I got
to get to work and pay my dues
and do the things they tell me to
Days pile up and years go by.
Now I'm old and don't know why
This isn't how I thought my life would be

By now we should have flying cars
and people living up on Mars
robot butlers, time machines
and cures for almost everything
But no one's even on the moon
And jetpacks won't be coming soon
Cars don't run on water yet
And we're leaving our kids in debt.

Give me more ideas, guys.

I believe there has been more predictions made in the past that war, conflict and violence were just a few years away from being eradicated. Many have said that solving the problem of hate between groups would be easy once science and technology brought the standard of living up to where everyone was comfortable and no one had any need to be jealous of what someone else had.

Get up at night to take a pee
Ten minutes later I just can't see
No splash of yellow in the bowel
Holy poop it sucks gettin' old

Dribblin' urine back to bed
Is somethin' stuck there in the head
My lord why can't I go tee-tee
Unless I piss on Kat McPhee

I hope you don't mind my revision/rewrite. I had some ideas going through mind so I thought I'd get them down. I pass them on to you.

When I was a little boy, you know,
I believed I could be anything.

Like an astronaut, the President,
Richie Rich, or even a celebrity.

My eyes were on the golden ring.
How come I just wanted to be me?

The sad fact is, I never really got to do
all things I always wanted to.

.......Days pile up an' years go by.
.......This isn't how I thought it would be.
.......In my mind, I'm still young and free
.......But now I'm old, that's the REAL reality.

I needed to believe in flying cars.
And people living up on Mars,

Robot butlers, time machines
and cures for almost everything.

My car don't run on water yet.
Thought I'd be singing at the Met.

The sad fact is, I never really got to do
all things I always wanted to.

.......Days pile up an' years go by.
.......This isn't how I thought it would be.
.......In my mind, I'm still young and free
.......But now I'm old, that's the REAL reality.
