Certainly not to be judgemental or come across superior in any way.other but i often wonder why do so many people own so many expensive basses when they can hardly play one? maybe i am missing something here, but it just seems pointless and a waste. is it perhaps an insecurity thing . you know the more great basses you have will make you a better player? also it would stand to reason that a serious player would want to "bond" with one instrument and get to know it intimately. i would think that is important. in my first years i had one good 80s fender precision bass that was with me for many bands clubs and gigs. i didn't need 10 basses. was just wondering what others thought.
haha..this thread popped up as I am considering buying a Fender AVRI jazz bass. It' be the 3rd NB for me in maybe 5 months.
Im certainly no pro...maybe advanced amateur is more like it.
Why do I own so many?
Without typing out some wordy response it all comes down to how a bass speaks to me and makes me play.
For years my main bass was an Alembic SCSD I got to that bass after owning 4 Alembics at once.
I was basically on a mission to have a custom Alembic bass built, so I bought some used Alembics over a period of 2-3 years to see which configuration I was most comfortable with. Long scale series I, Med scale SII, than a SCSD short scale. At the end of the day I realized the SCSD was the right bass at that time for me so the others went and my idea of a custom went out the window as well as I realized that the SCSD, while it wasn't everything I was looking for, was "close enough" especially with an SF2 at my disposal. Worth pointing out that during this time frame I was heavily into the Dead and Phils playing.
Flash forward to 2017...I've grown tired of the Dead stuff, have realized that being a "clone" of someone isn't what I aspire to be or want, so started thinking about a new bass. Long story short, I didn't want to gamble on buying something online I wasn't familiar with so every Sat on my way to a jam session I'd stop at Sam Ash to see what they had. Fender basses were always there, but I always ignored them in favor of trying out some of the used exotic basses they would have from time to time.
I think a Fodera and Pedulla were some of the ones I tried, I wasn't impressed enough with them to pay the premium though...Than one day I pulled down a Jazz Elite and realized that it was the bass for me..sort of a homecoming as I had played jazz basses years ago but sold them off to fund my Alembic quest. That bass came home with me.
Since than I've bought a couple of other jazz basses as well as a P-bass. Why? Each one makes me feel and play differently...
