as far as adding a port on for a sealed cab...would that be to prevent damage to different woofers types or would it just be for tonal preference (ported = more low end / sealed = tighter low end)? A lot of the 2x15's and older 8x10s i see are all sealed...including the classic ampeg 8x10 stack. So would this just boil down to preference?

marklaforest - I've never tried it, but if you were to set up your rig with a pre-amp, power amp, and a PA speaker, and then send the same signal from the pre-amp to the mixing board, hypothetically the sound you'd get through the amp on stage would be much closer than to what the PA is projecting than that of a traditional bass rig. This could be a good thing, as you'd know exactly where you're sitting in the mix and be able to adjust your EQ and or playing.
+ or - how many dB? 1dB, 3dB, 10dB? Frequency response stats, are utterly useless with out this info.
Long as we're being sticklers: even with a published deviation (eg, "±3dB") frequency response stats are uninformative except in the grossest sense. If a cabinet was +3dB at 100Hz and -3dB at 125Hz and +3dB at 160Hz and -3dB at 185Hz it would still correctly be described as "±3dB"...but it would sound anything but linear. You want graphs. And graphs with decent enough resolution to represent critical deviations.
And carrots.
...you're better off saving for a rack-mount SansAMP or a really nice pre-amp.
