Why not Schroeder?

I've been reading a lot of threads lately about "super 12's" - loud, light, 12" cabs. Thuderchild, fEarful, Baer come up often, but I never hear anyone mention Schroeder's Mini 12. This has an extermely high spl rating and weighs about 20 lbs. Isn't this cab in the same category? I'm considering getting one of these "supers" and any comments would be appreciated.

To my ears, the Schroeder mini 12 has absolutely no low end, and funny aftertones in the midrange. Compared side by side with the others you've mentioned, there's no comparison in tone. I understand the "mids and not much else" may be some peoples sound, and more power to them, but I don't think those cabs sound good.

Max SPL is quite high on the Schroeders, but it's over an incredibly narrow bandwidth. The "super 12's" all tend to have high SPL that extends over a much wider bandwidth than what Schroeder cabs tend to offer. I've owned 3 of Jorg's cabs, and while they are great, they're in no way similar to any of the "super 12's" on the market right now.

I've played a few of these, and A, B'd em next to my Edens. there is no better amp for loud mid punch and cutting thru the mix. They have sort of an 80's Peavey sound though. - Not a great clean studio sound and not much warm deep resonance. Nice an loud though. If you just need to hear yourself on stage and DI your tone to the house, and dont have many muscles for carrying stuff, these might work for you. If you play Hard Rock and have to compete with guitar 4x12's it might work for you. They are very practical for these reasons, but they do lack a little in high quality tone. one of the Mini 12's was louder than my 2x10 Eden for sure. I wish Jorg made a kickback 12". I'd have bought one in a mini version.

Hoffman's Iron Law: Goes low, is small, has high sensitivity. You may only have two out of the three. A small cab that's very sensitive must sacrifice low end response to do it.

Well, from what I've read recently, the tide has turned on Schroeder cabs. Seems there were a few in this post who really didn't like the cabs, and I wonder if any of them actually owned the cabs. Still on my bucket list of cabs to try, especially the Schroeder Mini 12L+.

I owned one for about three days. Really disliked it. It is also of note that current Schroeder cabs have taken on more traditional designs.

My experience with the current crop of Schroeder cabs is a little different than some of the replies to this Zombie thread.

I've had a 212 Punchline for several years now, it replaced an excellent Mesa PH212.
IMO, & to my ears, the BNC drivers Jorge uses are excellent; I get as much depth as I need, along with balanced mids and crisp high attack.
In short- Excellent, paired with a GK Fusion 500, and a pleasure to have during load-in.

EVERYTHING about a cabinet depends upon the amp it's matched with and even more so- What the player does with it.
If a product does not compliment what you're putting in, then the answer is that it is not the right piece of gear for you, not that the cab, or amp, or bass somehow comes up short.
That's my conclusion!

P.S. I just completed my AM "warmup" and of course was inspired to use the rig pictured; my 212PL!
The bass pictured w/it is VERY powerful; massive EQ. I keep the Nathan East preamp just about dead flat; it's up there if I need it.
I had to turn UP the mids and lower the bass freq's to get the output I wanted from the Schro. It sounded almost perfect to my ears & for what I wanted.:D

I've played a lot amp/cab combinations... and I've never been happier than with my Mesa 800 and two Schroeder 112 cabs. I use them for everything now; for acoustic gigs, I leave one of the cabinets at home. For reference, I use my rig with a stock '73 P, a modern '13 J, a parts made J with an Audere Pre and Fralins, Jack C, and a couple of Jerry Jones. And... a Breedlove Fretless AEB, and a Kolstein upright. Beautiful.

Thanks. I have my eye on a pair of the 12L+ cabs. I think they would be the perfect size for the kinds of gigs I'm doing. I need to get my hands on a Mesa D800 one of these days too....

I had a 210212. Very loud. All mids. Not nice fat low mids. Honky, thin, nasty mids. You could hear every note punching through the mix, and each one sounded honky, thin and nasty. It was a big, thin-walled box with 2 10s and 2 12s, no bracing and no damping.

No sir, I didn't like it.

Absolutely. That was the best part of owning it.

EDIT: not trying to be a jerk about it. I'm sure you get a great sound out of your setup. It just didn't work for me. :(

That's what they say about owning Boats!:D

Edit too:
Way cool to add that, and certainly no offense taken, did not think you were a jerk at all.
We all get different results from gear based on what we play, the amp we use yada-yada-yada.
I've got good tone from my PL- There have been many other reports of players NOT liking Schroeder cabs.
