Yup, volume, treble rolloff tone, and a series/parallel switch for the humbucker. Never felt the need for anything else on that bass.
Because I own these ... no need for frets ...
I bought a fretless early in my bass playing days because I considered it a challenge, and I enjoyed the tone. I think they look cool and they require more focus. It's a different perspective. I wish I never sold it.
It keeps a percentage of people at bars from asking to play your bass.

Like the OP I feel that I get more out of playing fretless: it actives regions of my brain, it demands more attention from me, and consequently makes me feel that much more connected to my sound, in ways that a fretted bass does not.
And then when you only practice on fretless for hours and hours but take out the fretted P bass for a country gig it feels so damn effortless and even more fun.

I really enjoy the feel and how low action I can get with no noise. I have a fun time keeping the fretless-ness to a minimum and making my band mates smile when I decide in a moment to do something wild with glissando.

I don't really know but once I started...well...let's just say that I now have more fretless basses then fetted .
They look cool, they are fun and I prefer the sound. Now I need some more fretless live time!

My wife bought me my first electric bass in February 1976 and it was my only bass at the time, and I still have it. That's why I play fretless bass, because I have one. O got a fretted one a couple years later to play in a cover band because the sound of a fretted Rick just was more appropriate for eagles and Linda Ronstadt songs.
What drives me nuts is when I see a non-bassist demonstrating a fretless in a Youtube video and all they want to do is go "Whooooooo" sliding their finger along a string, while saying "you can do these real cool slides like this on a fretless."
I've never done that in 44 years. The beauty of the fretless to me is the sound of string on wood.

Jaco with a small band - Durham/Raleigh area 1986. Then Mark Egan with the PMG. Just a curiosity but then became my main bass for so many years - a Hamer-P that I converted. first defretting and then finally a thin ebony board was added.
No, BEADGCF ... had it strung with the F# for a very short while but find much better use on the high end
