I do that with cabs with wheel under... I don't remove the wheel everytime...
I would do that on cheap stages with unstable floor... the one on you see your head and the top of your cab balancing when you walk or jump beside your rig...
At the CMA Fest everyone has their own gear per set. They only show 1-2 songs per artist but in actuality it's over like 5 days (I went in 2009) and they do 30-40 min sets per artist.
With many 8x10 cabs including the Ampegs the footprint is small at the top and bottom thanks to the wheels and handle bar. When I've seen someone use them stacked sideways it was to provide more stability for their amp. SVT's fit the foot holes so you don't want to stack sideways for them, but if you've got a racked rig you need the extra footprint.
