Will computer speakers work with an unpowered mixer?

Hey, can a good set of computer monitors (i.e. 2 satellite speakers and a subwoofer with a power cord and an 1/8" plug that would normally go into a PC) be plugged into an unpowered mixer with an adapter (1/8" to two RCA jacks) and act as monitors?

I'm not sure if the computer speakers would be considered 'powered speakers' for an unpowered monitor.

I intend on plugging the D/I out on my amp as well as an iPod or PC into the mixer to learn songs and use as a practice amp instead of buying a little amp with RCA ins (since you can get a cheapy mixer with an XLR in for about $40).

as long as the speakers were powered themselves (usually located in sub) , sure. i had that kind of set up before.

I've never tried it, but I cant think of any reason this setup wouldn't work fine.
My only concern would be excessive mixer output levels overdriving these monitors inputs.

headphones = miniature unpowered speakers.

phone outs will not properly power regular speakers (unless your suggesting he use headphones to monitor, then sure, that would work too) . they will need some sort of amplification, whether by mixer, separate or self contained which is how 2.1 systems are generally made. i had Cyber Acoustics 2.1 system doing exactly what you want, it will work.
