Will I do ok without a bass amp (DI)?

Get a JDI---that's my two cents. Then experiment with re-amping through your guitar amps for a little amp character along with your DI'd sound, using amp modeling plug-ins, stomps, etc. etc. etc. IMHO you always want to track as quality a DI'd track as you can--then it's really easy to further sculpt the sound with combinations of the above techniques.
