Fender could slip, I just don't see Warwick dethroning them. They're expensive, even the Rockbasses cost more than a Squier.

Will Warwick become the new Fender?

warwick would have to do some different things to do it you are right
fender is one idiot in charge of guitar center or some other outlet, or in charge of fender themselves to being down the slide

Warwick caught on like crazy when introduced to North America. It began to look like they would take over as market leader.
But lately (last few years) that growth rate has slowed while there seems to be a resurgence in the popularity of Fender products. Warwick has countered by offering more and more models to try to gain the buzz of bygone years.
You are correct. Right now the only way to get a real Warwick bass with proper brass and bell bronze hardware is to get a custom shop model. Starting just under $4k. The GPS series use cheaper hardware and have outsourced a lot of the work.
Although some of the higher end USA Fenders sell towards those prices. Especially if they're a signature model or special relic job.
Some would say at one point in time, Warwick was trying to be the new Spector

Just because Fender are on top now doesn't mean that another brand wont come along one day and take them down. Warwick, Spector, Dingwall, Mayones, Japanese ESP/Ibanez's are already far better instruments, no doubt, but you cannot beat pedigree, not easily anyway.
My opinion is that Fender will die out as its demographic of users do. for example, as the baby boomer generation dies off (people born between 1946 and 1964) so does the belief that gay people shouldn't get married, that you should marry and have kids early, that you should hit your wife if she doesn't have dinner cooked, that not serving a black man at a bar is normal.

To date,I have never owned a Warwick and have only played one.
Maybe because the OP likes to hear everyone's opinions before stepping back in?

I think there's a valid point here - which is really that it's up to Fender "slipping" somehow (in a way they haven't already done), and then someone else being in position to overtake them. There tends to be a distinction between "classic" and "modern" bass tones and if something happens that makes the market tilt completely to the "modern" tone, I suppose Warwick is in as good a position as anybody to benefit. But I don't see it happening.

I don't see any evidence whatsoever that preference for classic Fender designs is a generational thing. You look at all the 20 somethings playing in hipster/indie/pop-punk/metal/whatever bands and there are Fenders all over the place.
Really, what we're looking at here is the dynamics of a "classic." When someone produces the first really impactful piece of work in a given field, that piece of work becomes the "classic" and therefore the point of reference for everything that comes after. No matter how much the stuff that comes later improves on the original, people still feel that the original is the Original and keep going back to it as a point of reference. Many people have written plays since Shakespeare but Shakespeare will always be Shakespeare. Evolution of the tradition only reinforces the importance of the root of the tradition. Fender benefits from the same phenomenon, for better or for worse.
