Winter 2017 Build-Off: Basso-Cello

Been a while since I've posted, on here. I've been busy with school and work. But I got a chance to work on the frame for this bass.

So I would make sure those flanges are rounded off with softened edges as I can see them being prone to catch on things, including a bowed bow. Is the center beam going to be steel or wood?

Yeah I'm going to soften the edges a little, it's also going to be angled back so it won't get in the way of a bow. The center beam is going to be wood, all I'm building now is a frame to go around the bass.

Hmm, missed this whole bit in March. IMHO, the cake frosting for bass building would be epoxy mixed with fumed silica. It's a standard epoxy admixture for filleting and can achieve a texture not unlike buttercream. Plus, it's mostly air, (tiny glass bubbles) so it doesn't weigh much. Just in case anyone feels like going there... :chicken::bag::snaphappy:

What clear coating are you applying? I dig the look so far - always been a fan of allowing the process (grind marks on the steel) to visually remain as part of the completed look. :thumbsup:

Just rustoleom rattle can clear, I've used it on a couple stripped rat rods and after 5 years it still looks good. I might try baking it on if it fits in my oven.

I agree on leaving proccess marks most of the time, I tried to do as little (unintentional) grinding as possible but it's inevitable and with the finish I used on the steel (heat colouring) I couldn't go back and smooth them out. In any case it doesn't detract from the aesthetic.
