Greetings from the North,
I know there's a few of us out in bassdom that have resorted to modifying a bass or two to keep from going stir crazy over the Winter and during the current Plague. I recently finished tweaking a Squier VM Jazz 5 Bass that my wife had given me a few years ago. It was a loving thoughtful gift but admittedly it was the last thing I'd pick up to play. I installed a pair of Lindy Fralins a couple of years ago and it did improve the sound but still the neck felt kinda chunky, the pots and knobs felt cheap, there were sharp bits on the bridge and it was misaligned yada yada. Just annoying stuff that would have caused me to unload it but it is a 'loving gift'. So being a 'Vintage Modified' I decided to modify it into something that would I really enjoy playing. Modifications done......
- Lindy Fralin 5 String Jazz Bass Pickups
- 2008 Fender American Bridge
- John East J-Tone active/passive pre amp
- Hipshot Tuners
- Custom Neck Shave & painted headstock by Rick at Haywire Custom Guitars in SC (Great work)
- White Squier logo from Rothko & Frost
- Fresh LaBella Tapewounds
I am now really enjoying how this bass sounds and plays. The work that Rick at Haywire Custom Guitars did on the neck turned this cumbersome chunky neck into an easy playing wonder that's hard to put down. Turn around time for having the neck shaved was only a week, cost 130.00 and saved me from paying 3 to 4 times for a new neck from someplace else.
The John East J-Tone active/passive pre amp is really well thought out and so easy and simple to install. I'm not really a big fan of pre amps but this unit brings this bass alive! And you won't get stuck if the 9 volt battery dies out because you can run it passive. This bass can nail sounds from old John Paul Jones (Zep) to Bijou (Townshend) Drains on Thunderclap Newman's 'Something In The Air' to modern in your face gospel sounds. It's now ALIVE and Amazing!
So what are you working on or what have you recently finished?
