Wireless units?

With the cheaper X2, you're going to have line of sight issues if you install it inside a bass. Don't know about the other ones, but mine drops out if something solid gets in between it and my bass.

With the XDS-Plus and XDR, at church, I can walk from the stage area across the hall and into other rooms with no problems. Continues working just fine with 2 or 3 metal stud walls in between. No line of sight.

I set my rack up once behind my house and then walked around to the front of the house and it still works. That was operating through 3 walls and I was standing by my office, which houses a wireless home network and several other pieces of wireless equipment and phones. Not to mention the cell phone on my belt about 18" from the X2 transmitter. It seems to be quite reliable and good at filtering out other RF sources.

+1 on mx21's experience. the receivers with the external antennas do their job really well.

just be sure to read the manual page about the difference between the ring output (full range) and the tip output (low pass). I used one of those insert patch cables with the full range going to the overdrive and distortion and the low pass as clean and really liked the way the extra high content made those effects sound. (that was with the xds)

with the xdr I just use the hot side of the balanced out (full range) entirely, but I miss having the two signals, normal and extra sizzle, in my old setup. could do it with the xdr but now it'd be many many feet of extra cabling to go wrong.

Darn if that's the case then my GAS has just been cured :crying:

Wouldn't it be awesome to just be able to flip a switch on your bass and BOOM! you're hooked up! Maybe someone will try this mod and see what results they get.

don't forget the x2 power button is momentary, your average toggle won't work. and you probably would want the channel button too.

I just picture this coming on in my case all the time and killing whole families of 9v's

I use a Sennheiser ew172 G2 wireless (rackmount) for my bass. Outstanding range and tone. Never had a dropoff. I use rechargeable batteries and have had them last through one 4 hour gig and ALMOST :D through another 4 hour gig. Yes, I forgot to charge the batteries before the second gig. It will stop immediately when the batteries die. :o

I love my X2. I've had two other similarly priced wireless units and they were god awful, unusable. I've never had a single issue with my X2.

One thing I have noticed is a touch of lag when you're a long way away from the receiver, but we're talking when I got FOH during sound check, and it's a millisecond lag, but just enough that I notice it. On stage it's a champion and I think I'll always run an X2 for my live sound.

That lag is due to the speed of sound from the speakers to your ear, nothing to do with the X2.
If you were to take your bass to the FOH and plug directly into the sound board, you'd hear that delay.

All digital equipement induces a latency. No matter how much you pay or what it is.
You have a A/D , transmitter , receiver , and a D/A.

A SPX 990 is 4ms.
A DM2000 digital board is 3ms
A 828MKIII is 2ms
etc......

Do the test;
Split your bass , one line directly in a CPU
Another going through your X2 in the CPU.
Record both simultaniously.
Then in your editor , check how much delay there is between both.
My guess ; 3ms...

True on the surface, but I think he was referring to the actual walk if he noticed what I noticed. While I'm standing near my amp the reproduced sound comes as fast as I'd expect, but the further away I walk the more noticeable the lag becomes. It's the same lag I'd have if a cable was used, but since it's a wireless I can stand next to FOH and hear what everyone else hears, which is the lag brought on by distance. It's freaky because I have to try NOT to play to my own lag :)

Pretty close guess - it's 4. I used a scope to measure the signal going into the X2 transmitter (channel 1) and the signal coming out of the X2 receiver (channel 2). I did a single trigger on channel 1 and capture the start of the pluck. You can see that the output coming from the receiver is delayed by 4 milliseconds. See image of the scope screen below.

The delay I was actually referring to was the delay through the air. You won't really hear 4 ms of delay. But at 100 feet from the speakers, you might have almost 100 ms of delay, plus or minus, depending on atmospheric conditions. That you can hear.

I have just got the Line 6 Relay G30 which is not available in the U.S.. It is based on the X-series but with one great advantage, the cable to the pack unit is 1/4" jack to jack. So no more moulded jack or socket problems that was the down fall of these units. On the Line 6 web site choose UK as you option on country, or follow the link below to it's specs.

http://uk.line6.com/relayg30/specs.html

Hopefully this change will be available in the U.S.

As for the system, easy use, better battery options and more info on how the unit is for power and signal, top marks.

I read in a magazine a couple of months ago that Ofcom, the UK communicationm ombudsman are looking are realigning the usage of radio waves now that the terrestrial TV turn off is in swing. Some of the current legal radion bands used by wireless systems may become illegal, but AFAIK it's not definite yet. It may be worth looking into if you're in the UK.

Also, am I correct that a simialar TV switch over is in progress in the US? I don't know if something similar is in the pipeline over there.
