Having listened to the album front to back several times, it reminded me of a lot of the tracks on the good albums that were decent songs, but not as good as the hits, so ya usually skip 'em to hear the hits. For the life of me, I can only vaguely remember Fire in the Hole and Without You. The charisma between EVH and Gary was nothin' special.
I certainly don't think the album sucks and I'd still take it over most modern music.
Unfortunately for Gary, the album had to be on par with the previous albums or he was screwed. Interestingly enough I found EVH to be the most experimental on 5150 and VHIII. His tones and techniques were very different from previous albums, which was a gamble especially with a new singer. With the purists, the album either had to sound like DLR or Van Hagar or the album was gonna tank. Since it didn't, not many people wanted it. I also recall seeing some clips on MTV with Gary and he seemed to perform really well since his voice was a nice compromise between DLR and Sammy.
Since it tanked, he was the scapegoat. Same thing happened with Motley Crue. The album tanked and it was all Corabi's fault. With the music on the album, I don't think Vince would have been able to fix it either.
At least Mike A. had the class to include Cherone in on the HOF Inductance...not in person, but had nice things to say....maybe THAT is why he's not on this tour... 
I just don't understand the hatin' here at times on M.A.'s playing, it fit the songs...what more did you need???

I would bet that is a reason, as well as he did some playing with SH - the sworn enemy of the VH boys. Talk about a trip back to junior high.
It is not and will not be VH without MA. Although, with 3 VH boys in the band, Dave better watch out or he'll get bumped and they'll do it 3 piece.
I doubt the tour will happen anyway...

I once knew some people who knew MA and they basically said he loves everyone and doesn't have a mean bone in his body. He remained friends w/Sammy because he didn't really care about the feud between him and EVH. Remember, Sammy was originally kicked out for not wanting to record an album when his first kid was due.
I think EVH and DLR are broke enough that they'll make it happen.
I'd guess the tour will happen, but it would be amazing to see what would happen if they fought so much that they'd need to cancel.
Broke? Hardly! The VH catalog makes millions a year, plus Dave got an $8 million dollar payout for his failed radio gig. I think it's a case of knowing that this may be their last chance for a big huge paycheck before they retire.
And we know if you can be pretty competent on guitar it would have to be waaaayyyyyy easier switching to bass.

It would if you're playing in Van Halen, most definitely. I'm not trying to bash MA as a player at all because I think he plays great, but Van Halen is not a bass virtuoso's gig.
