I made a refined version of this pickup months ago... 1 humbucker for each string, AlNiCo5 magnets and thinnest wire. Perfect for passive use. 22k output. Sounded very very good, clear... the sound is "low impedance" while the ouput is "high impedance". I also offer it as an option on my instruments but these pickups take a lot more work than standard stuf... for a 4 strings there's 4 times more work!

It's been a couple years and I will be moving in a few weeks. I almost forget which bass I was going to put these in. lol

PM Me before sending anything.

OK... wont be much longer! The whole project took a lot longer than I expected since I had to source custom size ceramic magnets and stuff.

Now I have all the parts, I just have to finalize the assembly. This pickup has a lot of parts!

That's from all the small coils. The capacitance and inductance is lower, but it still has a lot of turns of wire, and turns = output.

Amen brother! Now think about making tapped steel keepers and adjustable pole pieces instead of the alnico rods!

For this reason and because it's a very tall pickup, I'm also making a version with rod magnets.

IMHO no need to make adjustable poles (since they're hidden on my pickups) but I know what you're talking about, it takes a lot of time and effort. No way to make them cheap!

They are hidden on mine as well, but the original intention here was to get as close to the real Wal pickup as possible. So all my geometries are the same, as is the metal mass.

Well, in this case I appreciate all the work you're putting on this project - I didn't have interest in making a clone but know that you're being extremely picky and this takes time and effort. Keep us posted! :)

David,

Is this something that might be able to be done in a 5-string version as well? I'd love to have a couple of Wal-type humbuckers (in MM 5 cases?) to replace the Basslines J/MM setup on my Curbow Jazz 5, expecially if you're still thinking about doing a lowpass filter type preamp...

Mike

Yes, I can make any number of strings really, providing I have a case to fit the pickup in.

They fit nicely in MM style covers, but they are more than twice as deep for the accurate Wal version.

The rod magnet version will be similar to regular pickups in depth.

Ok so yeah I remember when this pickup was originally bought!

Yeah, it's a while ago....

Clones are going to be available now? What about the preamp, are they separate or part of the clone job? That filter setup in one of my axes would be... wow.

Yes, clones, and then shortly followed by a preamp, sold separately.

I'm going to have to catch up on this thread... if it hasn't been questioned though, how would these things sound in contrast to say EBMM's ceramic (and/or alnico) pickups?

Totally different. Much fatter in the lows and mids while still having a bright top end. There are a lot of recordings using Wal basses as examples.
