Double Bass Wooden end pin (revisited)

I actually made this change last weekend and it was one of those occurrences where the tone/volume sound was quite remarkably different, compared to previous steel. Used a standard 13mm dowel, make of oak, and a rubber tip at the end, like the ones you see on wooden chairs. My issue thought is that I have to tighten the screw a fair bit to prevent the bass from sliding down. Doesn't seem to be impacting the dowel, thus far, but not sure if I may actually be doing any damage in the process?

You will certainly wear depressions into the dowel, but so what? You just have to replace it every few years. Eventually you might want to find a socket with some kind of collet lock.
