Word of the day

It means cheap. I'm not a polirical candidate, I'll use Niggardly whenever I feel the desire.
THIS is what's wrong with our society today :)

Only an uneducated boob, or choicefully ignorant individual, or one who is so lazy as to not seek the definition of a word to which they did not know the meaning... would misinterpret a word who's clearly defined definition is cheap.

Here's an idea. Approach a group of black guys hanging out in front of a bodega, strike up a conversation, and when the conversation calls for it, work the word in. When they likely will get angry, make sure to point out that they did not understand the meaning of the word, and offer up some of your free education. And, if you are talking like that here but wouldn't say that word there, then you sir, are what's wrong with society.

No. I have no problem with the word. I've heard of it before, but I just won't use it myself. If you want to use that word, by all means go ahead. I know it's a legitimate word - my point is just be prepared for the consequences when you use it.

FWIW, a while back a radio show host
got fired for using that exact word even in the correct context. Like Unrepresented stated, there are lots of other options. :)

^^^^^^^^I agree with the crowd. N-iggerdly is not a good word choice in this day. Neither is "******" - the original meaning is a bundle of wood. Just say "bundle of wood" or kindling. I don't think "nukes" was trying to provoke.

If your intention is to provoke, you should try harder to obfuscate. [my word today]
obfuscate
verb
°To deliberately make more confusing in order to conceal the truth.
°To make dark; overshadow.

So should the thread be censored to be retitled "word of the day unless a valid word sounds similar to a completely unrelated yet offensive word"?
Nah, it's just a handful of words that fall in that category, unless you include definate slurs. And some of them seem regional. Like "dago" - I'm of some Italian ancestry and I don't like, not one bit. I notice Italian-America people on the East Coast toss that and "wop" around like it's no big deal....we don't roll that way in the Mid-West. Them's fighting words!

I provided the definition with the word. Had I wanted to push people's buttons, I would not have defined the word by its meaning- which clearly has nothing to do with any offensive word outside of your minds.
I've lived in "da hood" (newburgh, NY) and live in a mixed race family.
A vote for Nukes is a vote for progress!
Tank yoo veddy much.

Dude, it's a 19th century word, for God sakes. Language changes over time. Yes, it has a seemingly innocuous definition, but it's just not appropriate to use anymore under any circumstances. That ship sailed a long time ago.

It's valid word with a specific definition that is not offensive in any way. Just be prepared for society in general these days to not know that, that's all.

If you're British, can you still say "smoke a fag" to no ill effect, in someplace like, say, West Hollywood?

You can both say it and do it apparently - no theory on the effect.
