WOULD YOU DO THIS??

ok im a little out of topic, but i really need an advise, my friend that plays with another band needs an amp rig for a show this friday, so he called me asking me if he could rent my rig consisting in GK 1001rb,bbe maxcom compressor, furman power c everything on a rack case and an avatar b410 neo cabinet, so i would get 50 bucks and two tickets that are worth 40 bucks each. they are only going to play 6 songs
so my question is, should i do it? my rig is brand new and im afraid.....

thanks

Not a chance without a written guarentee stating "You break you buy/fix". Even then I'd probably not do it.

say no and this will be a lesson and more of a drive for him to get his own gear... if he did the same for you you'd appreciate it after you've played through some crap gear and have more of a drive to get your own.

I know it sounds greatly selfish, but it's yours and you don't have to say yes.

I'd also say no, especially since you said you don't know him too well. I've been burned a lot before lending gear to people, it either came back dirty, or cracked (hollow body guitar), or totally busted (that's right, all 4 speakers in a 4x10 blown!!). And even though it could potentially be repaired, it still isn't quite the same as it was when you lent it out.

Don't do it unless you are ready to incur the cost to repair any damage. If he damages it, he will not want to pay the repair cost and your friendship will be stressed way further than it would have been if you had just said no. IMHO

I'll echo what has already been said and tell you this short story.

My Pops is also a bass player (mostly retired now) and there was a time when we were both playing out in the South LA area maybe 2 or 3 nights a week at different venues with different bands. One night my head just stopped working late in the 3rd set. I plugged into the board and finished the last couple songs. I had a gig the following night and my Pops didn’t so I ended up asking my dad to borrow his head for just that one show. At the time I was playing through an SWR GP, a DBX160XT, and a Stewart World 2.1 which I figured was worth over a grand all tolled and he had a Carvin Pro 500 he'd gotten used for $250... in addition to leaving my head setup at his house, he also made me leave my Warwick with him as collateral. He kept saying, “it’s not that I don’t trust you, but now I really trust you.”

I understood and was fine with the arrangement because I feel the exact same way about my gear.

I of course never let the drunk guy at the bar gig who “plays a mean bass” sit in, and unless it’s a close friend or relative, I don’t lend out gear.

In fact, I’ve turned down sub gigs when I heard “oh and my friend’s a bass player and he usually sits in on a few numbers…”

Gear is just too personal a thing to me I guess.

I would do it if he met all of my conditions. He would pay the $50 to "rent" it, pay me to transport it, pay me to set it up, and pay me for being his bass tech/roadie for the night.

Oh yea, can't forget the "you break it, you bought it" clause as well. If it breaks while he is playing it, he pays for it! :p

He doesn't meet any one of the conditions then my answer would be "no".

Kelly Lee - your comment is right on the dot!

I know I would not have a problem with someone using my gear as long as I am the one setting it up and doing the leg work.

In my experiences, the people who constantly ask to borrow gear are the ones who spend all their money at the bars on the weekends. If they counted up all of the money spent on pricey bar drinks and put it all in a savings account - they could buy a rig for themselves and YOU!

NOOOO!!!!!!

if he doesn't have the money to buy his own rig then he doesn't have the money to replace yours. you can have any contract known to man but if has no money anyway you're sol. you will never see a dime.

if he was guy i knew well and had his own rig. i have doubled up on dual gigs and such where bringing one rig instead of two makes thing easier. that's ok. and i have lent stuff to trusted friends (for free of course)
