Would you make this trade?

From Craigslist:

I have a white 12" Apple iBook that I would like to trade for a 4 string Fender bass. Very clean condition, and works great! Specs:

12"
800MHz G3
640MB ram
Airport card
30GB HDD
CDROM
OS 10.3.9

Please respond if interested!
I have a Mexican Jazz that I haven't played in a year or so. I'm gonna see the laptop tomorrow. Basically I just need a laptop to take on tour with me, mostly for web browsing and email. Guess I don't really need a CDR or DVD drive. I've been really digging my wife's MacBook, so I'm pretty jazzed to have an iBook.

So I ask the TB community...Would you make this trade?

Thx for the quick responses. Yes, it is an older Mac. And the Jazz bass will retain its value for years longer than a computer....I hadn't thought of that. iBooks with similar specs are going for $350-500 on ebay. Isn't $275 about the value of a 5 year old MIM jazz?

Do you want and need a mac book?

Do you see yourself using the bass in the future? Any plans to sell it at all? Are you attached to the bass in any way?
Want the iBook (different than MacBook)...yes! Need it...no. The jazz has been my backup to my Godin BG-V for the last few years. Only had to use it once when a battery died in the Godin. My other choices for backups if I let the Jazz go are an Austin 4str P-bass copy. Also I have a '78 Musicmaster (shortscale) that plays sweet.

I almost traded the Jazz in for the Godin at the retailer I bought it from for $90. The next day I immediately went back and got it back after convincing myself that I could come up with $90 easily and was happy to have the Jazz bass back.

My only attatchment to it is that it was my first full sized bass that I ever bought. My first bass (the Austin) was given to me, and the Musicmaster was the first bass I bought before eventually going to the MIM Jazz.

So I have 4 basses. Only need 2. Will probably eventually be getting a Modulus Q5 and use the Godin as the backup.

Thanks for all the thoughts and advice.

If you can come up with the cash for the Modulus, the older Mac should be no problem.

I won't be going for the Q5 anytime soon. Would probably have to finance it anyway.

I'm starting to have more reservations about this trade after hearing some of your thoughts. It's a tough call. I just don't even play the Jazz anymore. Anyone care to comment on the value of a 5 year old MIM jazz in good condition?

Well, you can always look at it this way: the comparative values mean almost nothing in this situation because you'd be trading something you don't use for something you *would* use. Are you planning t sell the bass any time soon or will it gather dust in the closet? Better to have a laptop that you'll use on the road (and not have spent a tonne of cash on -- just in case).

IMHO and alladat...

I don't think I'd ever buy a used laptop in the first place. They get obsolete too quickly, and they're usually starting to break down when people sell them. Meanwhile, 10 years from now, that bass will be a vintage MIM, made better than the MIM's in 2017.

not worth it. an ibook? psh. you can do far better than that. i believe you can get a referbished macbook for around the price of your fender + some$
