My first bass was a cheap Kingston bought in 1966. After graduating to higher end Fenders, I gave it to a kid who asked me if I would sell it to him. You would have thought I gave him a bag of gold from his reaction.

I always give away cheap instruments if I'm not using them. It isn't worth going through the hassle to Craigslist something for a hundred bucks or whatever.

Just me, but I would fix it .... done it before on an old one, and give to a kid wanting to learn to play. Did that with guitars as well. School probably won't pay to repair it, and they won't do it themselves typically. If nothing else, would put an ad in Craiglist "free beginning bass to beginning player" ...... but again, I would make it playable.

I have an old bass--the first one I bought as part of a Hartke starter kit. It's an entry level instrument for sure. I haven't played it in in more than 10 years, having moved on to higher quality basses. Never gigged with it. It's not particularly beautiful. The last time I touched it, the electronics were kinda shot; I'm sure they've just decayed. I have no intention of playing it again, so it's been sitting around gathering dust.

I don't think it has any re-sale value and I'm not that much of a gear-head that I would rebuild or modify it.

I feel sort of bad thinking about putting it out in the trash.

What would you do with it?

I'd never throw away a bass. I inherited two, one I sold to a friend, the other I traded for a uke that I then sold.

Thanks for all the input! Just to close the loop, I connected with a fellow TBer who commented on this thread who lives near me. He's taking the bass (and the amp), will get them up to speed, and donate to a local music school.

At the senior center, our center took delivery of a peavey kr600e, it will be the basis of a house band. We have speakers on the way. While talking to a county employee, part of the discussion was collecting instruments for classes at local community centers. So we are writing a commercial, asking for the instruments.

Just saw a note in our weekly school email newsletter that they accept donations but that donations should be submitted through a particular process to determine safety and usability. Items valued over $500 must be accepted by the board through their process. I guess I skirted that with the amp and cab I donated. We’ll call it $499. But the process isn’t all that clear. I’ll stand by my original statement that giving things away is hard. Far easier to sell cheap on Craigslist.

I did that with my first bass, a Framus. It was damaged and unplayable with broken electrics. No restoration project could ever make that bass playable again.
