Wren and Cuff questions

Hey so im looking at all of the WC pedals and im at a loss. What im looking for is the one with the lowest gain. Im trying to cop Troy Sander's tone. The TFR seems like it would be good but there isnt a clean blend. Ive heard you can have this option added on for free but i dont see it on the site. The Pickle Pie B is also catching my eye.

Im not a Muff historian so, what I do know isnt enough to have me lean one way or the other on any of them.

The Civil War gives me the impression it wouldnt be best for bass, and is also the most costly.

The TFR seems to have the tones Im looking for but no clean blend.

The Pickle Pie B I need to look into more but if it can sound like a Muff then that may be it.

The Tri Pie sounds good so far but I dont know enough about the history of the pedal its cloning so I wouldnt know what Im walking into with a bass.

Any advice you guys can give me would be great, thanks.

have you tried emailing Matt at W&C? He has always been very quick to respond to any questions I've put to him.

I've asked him about the TFR and the clean blend, he said it isn't necessary. I had a Tri Pie 70 which didn't have the blend, and there was no low end loss at all (sold it on as the voicing of the pedal wasn't quite what i wanted, but it sounded huge, no blend needed!).

My view would be TFR without the blend sounds like what you're after. Definitely lower gain than the Tri Pie

thanks for the reply, yea i sent him one him early this morning so hopefull today he can get back to me.

the only thing im wondering about now is if the TFR is too doomy. I mean i love how it sounds but if it will be useable all the time. The PPB seems like it may have more versatile tones but I guess I can always return it and try a PPB out.

also do you think a VT bass in the signal chain could produce good results?

He used the Pickle Pie B on the last tour run. The second dirt option was cycled based on the venue and his brother Darren's feel for the night. We just give them a Grey Stache too.

They tend to use green russians in the studio over the other muffs.

thanks for the info rratajsk!!! hmm......so i guess either would work. The PPB seems like it may be better live. Also Im assuming the last tour was CTS since they are still doing The Hunter.

so basically the only things stopping me from ordering a tall font russian are:

A) Do Wren and Cuff still offer the free clean blend

B) Does it perform well in a live/band setting

since Matt said that you dont even need the clean blend Im becoming more open to that, but Im worrying about it performing. Multiple bassists (Mastodon/Mars Volta) use the PPB live. So if it performs better I may just get that one. Would love to get these questions answered today so I can get rid of this GAS.....are there AA groups for us? redic

thanks eyeballkid, i saw your demo of it with the other pedals. it wasnt enough for me to get an idea of it but they seem to sound great. this may come down to a coinflip, basically it seems im choosing between two amazing tones. bah

i think im gonna go with a Pickle Pie B because it seems to be more tweakable. the TFR sounds amazing, but I would buy it after the PPB because I wouldnt want my GAS to get the better of me. One day though....thanks for all the info guys.

Doesn't the tall font have a mid scoop? Like the good old green russian muff?
The pickle pie seems to have more mids.

PPB has a little more mids than the other versions, but still has a big midscoop.

have to add that much as i liked my tri pie, the grey stache i got the other week is staggering... cuts through live like no other fuzz i've used. but i'm sure you won't go wrong with any of the pedals mentioned in this thread, they're all ace

it really comes down to how much you nit-pick each one and put them under a microscope so to speak.

the PPB seems more of a "safe" buy. the TFR would probably blown things up with its doomyness. gah i wish i could get both #firstworldproblems

I have a pickle pie b and appreciate that it allows my tone (focused mids) to come through without mangling it in muffitude. I think it works well in a mix. Controls will allow you to decrease that of course, should you wish to blanket yourself.

yea those soundclips sold me on it. The TFR sounds amazing, but I think if i fiddle around with knobs and EQ I can get a deep low gain fuzz out of it. The TFR is not a one trick pony, but seems more of one compared to the PPB. Yknow, with the options of tones and what not. I ordered one last night as my GAS got to me. Hopefully it arrives this week!

I have both a Sovtek/EHX 'tall font' Russian Big Muff and a W&C pickle pie - I did a shootout a while back:

My current PPB setting is TOTALLY different to my muff setting - neither loose bass and the muff is fat, deep, wooly, warm and fuzzed out - the PPb is a low gain distortion that slices through the mix.

i'd do clips but my pedals are at my practice space and my music software took a sh*t and died
