writers block

ive had writers vlock a few monts now and its the most frustrating things ive experienced


i figured this is the place to go for help because of the experienced musicians ive seen here..

any advice?

Try listening to some new music; you might just need inspiration.

I've had this happen before and it was one of the least enjoyable experiences I've encountered .

Try different approaches instead. If you are used to compose on bass then try on piano, guitar or software and program some rhythms or sounds. It might get you to some new places ;-).

If you feel you are turning around may be some new infos about harmony would help you if you are limited in this field.

Everyone writes 99% useless, bad music. The great writers are the ones who kept at it and wrote so much that their 1% of good stuff is quite a body of work.

Don't worry about whether your ideas are good or bad, just write them out, put them in a song, or whatever you need to do to get them out of your head and into the world. Then forget about them.
But if they stay in your head then they'll only block the better ideas from coming through. But you have to get it out of your system.

I say go see live music - that always gets me pumped!

I write tons of music (professionally) and sometimes I have to work through writers block. really just listening to music will spark something. also knowing when to abort a project and start fresh - nothing worse than wasting time on something that isn't going somewhere ... stop, go for a walk, eat a snack and start again. if the idea you were working on was good, but at a road block - save it and go back to in another day (fwiw usually I find that months later I can look at an old idea and forget the road block)

I had a teacher in college that had a great idea . . .take 10 notes (any 10 notes) write them down on sheet music and label them 0-9. make a melody outta your phone number . . . and if that sucks - call someone else!

Just started reading this thread in a search and I am happy to see a possible solution so early. I used to write solely on the bass and I tried writing on guitar and it changed my world as far as writing goes. (spoiled by instant gratification of hearing my riffs and ideas come to life)

But now since I would like to concentrate more on being a bass player I seem stuck on my old ideas. Not only that but the new ideas I do come up with seem forced or uninspired.

I feel like if I give this a try (working on my old ideas and leaving them behind) then some new inspiration will come!
