Yacht Rock is what the world needs now

So I’ve gotten totally hooked on the SiriusXM Yacht Rock channel. If you have a decent system in your car that will help bring out the bass, every song just seems to have the most tastefully wonderful groove to it. In terms of musicality, it just seems to hit the perfect sweet spot.

It’ll always be a mystery to me why it was once called “Adult Contemporary”. That just screams boring and no fun.

Meanwhile, Yacht Rock conjures up images of sun, relaxation, tropical drinks, beautiful women, insane repair bills, mind blowing depreciation, divorce lawyers, and the joy of one day no longer owning a boat.

Okay, so maybe some of the above is a downside.

Anything that actually rocks and is challenging, if not even threatening. Nothing complacent.

It was in the air we breathed as kids in the 70s, when I was into Queen and ELO. Then MTV hit. Then I got into the Beatles.

I guess now I’ve arrived at a point where I don’t care what’s cool, and I’m able to embrace Yacht Rock for its nostalgic value. I even started a 70s tribute band a couple years ago with some yachty overlap—now folded, alas. But yeah; I’m into it.

I'm with you. If you can try to forget that you've heard these songs a million times, and just listen like it's the first time, there's some good stuff there. Nice tasteful bass and drum grooves, (real) strings and horns.

I want a pina colada right about now.

Fair enough.

I mean, I sort of find that to be rather limiting, but I get it. I went through a metal or GTFO phase once upon a time.

Garage band I’m is trying to find a new lead guitarist. If we’d play 70s and 80s rock, I’d have two people in a heart beat. Instead, it’s like pulling teeth because it’s early/mid 60s stuff that is really before the rise of the “guitar hero”. As a result, it’s hard to find someone who is a lead guitarist who wants to play to music.

Is it my favorite genre? Nope. Is there merit to be found in the music? Yup. Can I have a good time with it? Certainly. Can I make it my own while still staying true to the original where it counts? Hopefully!
