Yamaha RBX360 sound, or lack thereof

Hi. Have an issue with sound output in as much as I don't get any from the neck pickup. Could be either the pickup itself or the balance pot (from neck to bridge the pots are Volume, Balance and Tone, I think). Given I'm an utter noob at guitar electrics and soldering how can I determine exactly where the issue lies?

I've established the wiring is the same as on the RBX270 and I have a multimeter. There are no unsoldered or loose wires in the control cavity. I can get sound from the bridge pickup and the tone pot works ok. Turning the balance pot to the opposite position gives no sound at all, even when tapping the neck pickup with a magnetic tipped screwdriver.

Any ideas? Thanks for reading.
