Can you have passive pickups (EMG Geezer) with an active pre-amp under the cover on the back of the bass?

For some reason I thought the Geezer Butler pickups by EMG were passive only but recently saw a bass with them installed but the board on the back had a battery inserted. Confused as heck.

I don't see the answer anywhere there lol. So a passive with an active pre-amp just means the signal is boosted and would need shielding to protect from hum?

Here is a picture. Pickups are EMG Geezer (which are passive by design) so not active that would take advantage of a pre-amp.. unless I am mistaken.
