I'd think a need for a new bass is probably something abstract, kind of like love, you just know when you feel it...

For me, it's usually because I see something (yeah, thanks a lot, TB) that I simply MUST buy.

There's GAS always of course, But Recently I realized there's some stuff you just need a simple 4 string for, only playing 6 strings is fun though

at what point do you decide you need a new bass

I started playing around 1980. I've owned over 50 basses in that time. The most I ever had at one time was 20 to 25 basses. Over the past two years I sold most of those to get down to just 4 or 5 core basses. Now I am back up to 9, soon to be 10 when I complete my fretless build.

That's the background, as for the question. I know I need yet another bass usually within the first 5 or 10 seconds after buying a bass.

I never NEED a new bass per se.

I do, however, succumb to GAS on occasion and buy another bass. It happens most often when a rare or unusual bass I've been wanting for a long time suddenly pops up. Then it's a struggle.

For me it has been when I wanted to venture into something more than what I was already doing or when I wanted to become more diverse. I went to a 5 because I had been playing a 4 for more than 25 years. I then bought a fretless 5 (SX) simply because I wanted to try my hand at a fretless bass. I then went to a 7 because I loved the 5 but wanted to explore chording and soloing I couldn't do on the 5. Now that I'm playing a 7 I think I'm where I want to stay as far as electric basses go. Of course, I'm now starting to look at upright bass because I recently had a chance to play one in a jazz setting and I really enjoyed it. So, I suppose my reason for buying a new bass is if it adds something significantly different to what I'm already doing.

I kinda do it one of ways:
1) I'm tired of this, so I'm flipping it and getting something else.
2) I got enough jobs this month to afford to spend $xxx on gear, and still eat, somehow.


Since I kinda have this deal where it's really hard to sell things, but much easier to buy things (anyone else got that?) I tend to end up with a lot of freakin' gear.

Some of which I actually sold this week.

And then immediately drained my paypal balance, to the tune of $300 or so...

As long as I have a bass that works well enough to gig with I won't need a new bass.
