Your GK 700RBII settings?

Curious about your compressor settings, as I was thinking about using one just to tame and squish the high transients when popping, giving me more of the tone I like to hear when slapping. I'm wondering what compressor settings would work to , not only give me the squish, but protect the woofers, also. I forgot to mention that I have a tweeter/horn in my LDS
with an attenuator. Since I'm using old school JBL k140's, I'm also wondering if some sort of high pass filter might be a good idea ?

Sorry for not getting back sooner on this, but that particular comp was in a PA rack of mine, with 4 other dbx266's

Here goes:

threshold was set @ -15db, which was just enough to kick it in on the hardest hits...

ratio @ 3:1

attack @ 1 o'clock

release @ 1 o'clock

output gain set to offset any signal loss incurred by using the comp - which was right around +5db...

These settings helped reduce any excessive cone movement, while not seeming to make any significant difference sound-wise... It also *seemed* to bring out my upper register notes a tiny bit in the mix, but that might have been imaginary...

Regarding a hi pass filter - can't help you there, I don't typically use them for bass...

Running a comp in the effects loop just seemed like it would be a waste of the pre/power amp interaction that BG says is so crucial to the GK tone.....

Maybe so, but I tried to set mine so that it wasn't very noticeable at all - and it seemed to help...

I am interested in picking up one of those EBS muti-comps, though... I quit using a comp when I switched to a BB750 for my main gigging amp, as it didn't appear I needed one with that amp... Later on, when I traded the BB750 for an M-pulse600, I still haven't needed to use that amp's on-board comp - as I haven't noticed any excessive cone movement with the M-pulse600, either... I *think* that the hi-current power section of those G-K amps make them put out a TON of low end, and that they seem to "rise to the occasion" when quick, strong lows are called for - when other amps wouldn't be able to put out as much...

Truth be told, I've always shunned comps for my bass playing, as I've always felt they've hindered any type of dynamics I've tried to incorporate into my playing...

You know, I feel the same way, in general. What I really wanted was something to let me beef up my input signal, without killing all of my dynamics. Tube sim mode (used sparingly) on the multicomp does just that. It's like it was tailor made for the GK 700rbii. Try one out, and see/hear for yourself!

Hey I was just curious about the biamp feature. Does this work on all cabs with a tweeter or only GK cabs? Does it need to be wired up differently?

Also I was wondering if it would be worth using the 4/5 switch with my 4 string, just because I play in drop c# so it's pretty low. Good or bad idea?

I definitely plan to check one out in the future - and as much as I love my new M-pulse600, I have no intentions whatsoever of getting rid of my 700rb-II...

The biamp feature only works on G-K cabs, unless you change out the jack and rewire cabs from different manufacturers...

You can try the 4/5 switch and see if you like it, regardless of what you're playing thru the amp - just be aware that using it in 5 string mode *can* be a bit rougher on drivers...

Does the biamp feature really add a lot? Is it really worth getting a GK cab just to make use of this feature or is not really that noticable? Basically, do you think it's something you should really take advantage of?

I've never used it, but one benefit is that you can dial in a wooly sound on the woofers while the tweeters stay clean. I'm not a tweeter kind of guy, so it is all moot to me.

It isn't worth the hassle *to me*, but I don't use distortion - and typically only use a little tweeter... I've used my 700rb-II with a Mesa PH610 and 810, Ampeg SVT-410HLF, and SWR Goliath SR for cabs that had tweeters - and things worked out just fine by using only a little tweeter, and not using G-K's biamp system at all...

Hey George, can you clarify what you mean by hassle? I have the 700RB-II and two RBX cabs...the special speakon cables came with the cabs and I just plug in and there you go...bi-amped.

Volume = 12:00
String button = OUT (4 string)
Contour = 0 (min)
Presence = 10:00 (adjust for room)
Treble = 12-2:00
Hi-Mid = 9:00
Low-Mid = 12-2:00
Bass = 10:00
Boost = Just above minimum
Tweeter = 0 (stopped working)
Woofer = 100%
Woofer high cut = engaged

Cab = SBX410+ Tweeter control on back all the way up.

Cab#2 18" sub (for larger shows)

I don't have enough headroom for louder shows, so I'm gonna upgrade, great head for most guys tho, solid sound, good EQ. Would be enough for most bars. smallish clubs, and small time outdoor stuff.

For my 1001rb II which is voiced the same way i use
Input pad= In(-14db's)
Volume = 9:30
String button = In (5 string)
Contour = about 9-12:00(depending on the song and room!!)
Presence = 12 to 5:00
Treble = 12:00
Hi-Mid = 9-10:00
Low-Mid = 12:00
Bass = 2:00 (if i need more Bass i just Eq it on my Active Bass!!)
Boost = 12:00
Tweeter = N/A
Woofer = 12-2:00
Woofer high cut = out(not engaged)

Cab = SWR Megoliath 810 Tweeter almost all the way up For most shows and big churches!!

Cab#2 SWR Goliath IV 410 for smaller churches and if i am not able to use the 810...other wises the 810 is my main cab!!

I am more going from the Funk to Jazz Fusion sound depending on what song i am playing...been like the more scooped mids Funk sound though lately with clear hi's and a real commanding Lowend!!

I'm using the 1001rb II also, I usually have everything set to noon, except - the input volume at 11 oclock and the boost at 3 oclock, the contour and presence almost off.

On the subject of compressors, I've used a Demeter Compulator and an Aphex Punch Factory with the gk with good results, the Compulator added a more softer attack with a slight roll of off the highs and a very slight 'growl', the Punch Factory was completly transparent except for the noticable control of dynamics it gave. I also used a VT bass -a great pedal, though I ended up prefering to plug straight into the GK after about a year or so of using it.

I sold all my pedals in June/July and got a Orange Terror so I use that for both clean and growly sounds and the GK for clean, while the Orange has more harmonics and warmth the GK has that smooth sizzly punch which I've come to appreciate more now that I can compare it with another amp.

How can I determine if my speaker driver is having a hard time handling it (I use a KRK Rokit 8 Gen 2 monitor)

In my case, I was getting what I'd call excessive cone movement when using it in 5 string mode... That amp is capable of putting out tons of low end, and I *think* was partially responsible for a couple of blown drivers... I was able to get plenty of lows with the regular EQing w/out using the 5 string setting, it seemed to stress my drivers less, and also caused less problems with low end from my rig and the FOH...
