Your ideal tuner?

I'm doing a bit of research for a friend who wants to design a multi-fx / utility unit for bassists, I thought I'd ask TB for some advice about the tuner section.

- What features are most important to you in an ideal tuner?
- What is your current favourite tuner?
- Is there anything about tuners that you don't like?
- What - if anything - would you like to see in a tuner that doesn't exist yet?

Thanks!

- What features are most important to you in an ideal tuner?

Strobe-like capability

- What is your current favourite tuner?

Pitch Lab Lite app on my Android.

- Is there anything about tuners that you don't like?

Bad note tracking and trying to use LEDs or LCDs to indicate direction of adjustment.

A tiny strobe tuner kit that mounts IN or ON a guitar (Similar to the N-Tune kits) that uses watch batteries.

The TC clip on is my fav at them moment. I use the Sonic Research as well, however not mounted on my board.

The TC saves space, weight & power. It's easy to use, and is accurate.

I find pedal tuners to be cumbersome now. They are great for setups and tuning things that a clip on can't (like synths). I would always use the Sonic Research tho, it's accuracy, speed, and range of options (reference pitch range, custom timings etc.) that apply to all of my instruments is why I love it so much.

This ultra cheap and make the work so good.

My ideal tuner? Only logic, careful thought, and life experience will tune your ideals.

I like it... now drop the syringe, and get back to work... kidding...

I have both a Korg GA-30 (reliable, inexpensive, small) that I use for quickie tuneups, and a Peterson StroboPlus HD that I use for recording and setup... A little pricey, but that's what GC gift cards are for, now aren't they. The unit has a rugged look, like that of the motion capture cams they use for hunting, which hopefully translates to, '... takes a licking', keeps on ticking.'. Good luck with your research!

Been using a Boss TU-2 forever. Been considering upgrading to something newer like the TU-3W, TC Polytune, Korg Pitchblack or Sonic Research Turbo Tuner.

For an ideal tuner:
Fast and accurate tuning
Ability to power other pedals if needed
Small box
Muting capabilities
Top jacks & power (not enough tuners have this)

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but it seems like a good place to ask a related question of my own. I've been using a Boss pedal tuner for a long time, which conveniently serves as a mute (not only for tuning) as well. However, I just bought a new amp that has a convenient mute button on the front panel, so I'm thinking about switching to a tuner that can sit on top of my amp, plugged into the amp's tuner-out, rather than on the floor. I obviously could use the Boss this way, but I'd rather have something (a) without a foot switch, and (b) with a display that doesn't face straight up, as you would want for a pedal on the floor. (It will be sitting on top of my amp, on top of a vertically stacked pair of 2x10s, so I'll be looking at it "sideways" more than from above.) If anybody has any suggestions for a non-pedal tuner that would be a good choice for this setup, I'd appreciate it.

Apart for the obvious accuracy requirement, form factor. Any tuner I get needs to be rack-mountable. All my bass and guitar systems are in racks with amps, wireless, external processing and a tuner.

I'm not sure I'd call it a favourite, but I've been using Korg DTR Series tuners for a very long time. Haven't seen the need to change.

I don't like that they are difficult to read in direct sunlight.
- What - if anything - would you like to see in a tuner that doesn't exist yet?
I'd love to see a wireless mute or multi-function pedal, possibly blutooth or better yet 2.4 mhz for better distance. I've put together a wireless pedal to mute and channel change from some Linear products I had on the bench, but I'd rather see it integrated into the tuner.

I've tried the Behringer tuner and found that it couldn't grab a low B from a bass guitar. I also didn't like the way it smiled at me. I've been Jonesing for the Petersen Strobo-Rack for years, but never found the deal I wanted nor the absolute need to get one other than the occasional direct sunlight show every couple of years. There's a very good chance I'll pick up at least one Korg Pitch Black Pro, if for no other reason that to change up the look. I also use the Korg LCA-120 for acoustic tuning and the Tascam TG-7 because it has a mounting option that allows me to attach it to a mic stand shelf next to a Fishman Pro-EQ Platinum Bass Preamp/EQ/D.I. on my "acoustic" duo set up.
