I began on a Yamaha RBX374 so, by default, I tend to run toward basses with similar setups. I guess my grandmother spoiled me with an active bass being my first axe so long ago.

I wish I just had one knob. And that knob would turn up both Jazz bass pickups and tone at once. I always have the tone full up. And live I lower both knobs together. In the studio I will play with pickups and blending for different parts, but in general I am just looking for ease of use.

I chose one volume one tone as that's what I have now. If I had the room and the skill to add another pickup, I would prefer one volume and one tone for each pickup, to get maximum flexibility.

Vol/bal/tone on passive Jazz basses. It's too distracting to be on stage twiddling with two volumes to get the right sound. Set it immediately with one knob to sit in the mix. Find the right blend with the balance. I modded every Jazz I owned this way.

Vol//bal/bass/treble for active basses. I have no need for a midrange knob given two pickups and a bass control.

I picked "other" because I like a wide variety of basses, all with different control options. My power jazz special and t bird pro are both active with a wide variety of tones (tho I've strung the bird with flats so it's a wide variety of "thud"), but my p bass is the typical two knob deal, and I've never really wanted for more. That being said, I've always liked the idea of humbuckers with coil tapping options, but I haven't found a bass I wanted with that option. I do have a couple 6 string guitars with coil tapping, and I find it adds a great deal of flexibility to the instrument.

My Ibby has volume, bass boost/cut, treble/boost, and pickup blend for the P/J pickups. My Ibby fretless has volume, pickup balancer, and bass boost/cut, mid boost/cut, and treble boost/cut. With my PF-800, I almost unlimited tonal options!

I keep everything neutral on the bass and dial in my preferred tone on my amp. Then I can boost/cut bass, treble, pickups, etc. quickly on the fly without fiddling with my amp too much during a gig.

My Warwick Corvette has active electronics and volume, blend and stacked bass/treble controls. I generally set them all at mid point and forget them. I'm a firm believer that tone comes from the right hand and vary how and where I pluck to get the sound I want.

I roll off the tone on the bridge pup a little, up to half way at the most, or run wide open depending on what I'm looking for.
