That thing looks like it could do some damage if it let loose. I've only had Hammond organs with Leslie cabs but I love the sound of the Wurlitzer, especially with the echo.
The Leslie bottom rotor was pretty cheap plywood, nothing special. They used to wrap the drum in a cotton bag. I don't know if it was to keep the dust off it or if it was intended to act as a diffusor. The top high frequency horn came with a plastic cone shaped diffusor. A lot of people would snip them off.
Maybe the styrofoam one that you had just had a smaller drum with less of a scoop. Not sure if I ever noticed a difference between the wood and styrofoam drums of the same size.
The Fender Leslie Vibratone speaker cabinet used to have a styrofoam drum and no top horn.
