Zdenek Gubb

I was just going to post a new thread about Gubb, glad I searched first. Hope you've gotten to catch Twiddle by now!

This guy is amazing! He has such a wide variety of techniques like slapping, rhythmic tapping, tasteful use of chords and melodic lines, and makes it seem so effortless to use them without stealing anyone else's thunder. His band mates also say he's a music theory whiz and plays their instruments as good as they do. Even if you're not a jam fan, I would think you'd be impressed with him. As a fan I'm biased and as a new player Im not knowledge enough to say, but I wonder if he could be considered one of the greats if he was more known.

Here's a recent video with a solo that starts at 4:30

I have Jonathan Schwartz from Sirius Radio, Channel 29 Jams to thank for coming across this band. I am month into learning the bass and listening to Zdenek Gubb is inspirational! Twiddled up on Spotify but good and filled my 2017 Ski Playlist with them! They have such a tight groove, distinct in a genre that is pure packed with talent these days. Have you caught Vulfpeck and Joe Dirt? Put these two together in a play list...

Anyone know what type of axe he grinds? After viewing, confirmed what I thought, bastard's got a 5th string...:bawl::banghead:

I just recently started checking out Vulfpeck actually. They have some pretty great music videos. And Joe Dirt is the man! CoverSolutions just posted a cover of their song 1612 with tabs to YouTube, and its pretty fun to play even if you only get every other note. By the way, I just realized their bass players name was Joe Dirt:laugh:

Yeah Gubb definitely has a 5 string, but I don't know anything about his set up.

5 String for sure and that thang is gorgeous! Kind of bummed cause thats way off in my future. Lots to time to put in before thats a reality! I really dig his sound.

Will certainly check out the 1612 Tabs and probably laugh my way through the first time! I'll add one more band for the moment, new to me but they've been around a while and thats Lettuce. Great sound and love those horns! But check out Erick "E.D." Coomes, the Joe Dirt of Lettuce.

Thanks AV!

Lettuce is great. I've been going back through all of theirs and Soulive's (Eric Krasno's earlier band) albums on Spotify, and there is all sorts of funky goodness in there. Since we're talking about funk bands in the jam world, i have to recommend Analog Son. They're a less known band from Denver, but they lay it down. The bass player is Josh Fairman, and he kills it! Definitely have to check them out.

As far as the 5 string, maybe it's not as far away as you think. I switched to 5 after only a year and a half of playing, and it's been a pretty smooth transition so far. I see you have a Squire P. I was considering the Squier VM Jazz V, very reasonable price.

Schwartz...again, plays Soulive, Denver, leads into Pretty Lights, which takes us far from the ZG post section of this forum.:smug:

Ok Analog Sun, just a moment, swipe, click Spotify, search and  a brand new release from Analog Son, Black Diamond, now playing:hyper:

Well 17 more months:bassist:

I say go for it but please no more mention of basses at reasonable prices! I'm weak and getting broker...;)

I should have clarified. I was going to go with the Squier, but my family helped me get a Fender.:hyper:

You're right, way off track from the Gubb. Check out the song Beehop. I love how many different grooves and genres of music are packed into one song.

Too funny as I jammed Some Where on the Mtn this morning and now bopping to Invisible Ink (Hein Hods Hoddle) Live listening for the first time. What I am really loving is how the four of them really groove so tightly together and thats one similarity to DMB and the earlier days of Spyro Gyra but still is there with Beckenstien and Shuman. My point...Tight as ..................clam!

There are some fantastic bass solos in this vid:
Twiddle Live at the Catskill Chill 9/19/2015 - Full Set HD

Some beautiful envelope filtered tones, a serious slap bass clinic and just a hell of a lot of good sounds to chew on.
Not a huge fan of the vocals from this band but they go way deep into jam territory. Saw them at the SF Independent a few months back and shot some vids - but nothing as good as what I posted above.

If you like GD / Phish / Moe this is great stuff - if not, ignore.

What kind of gear do you use on stage? Do you have a favorite bass that you play – or don’t play anymore?

ZB: Well! So, for gear on stage, I can’t even go through all of my pedals cause I don’t have them here in front of me to tell you what I have, but I would love to talk about my actual basses for a minute. A little background story: I had been going through a bunch of different basses and when I joined the band I was using a Invalid Link Removed Z 5 string bass and, it’s a little dinky thing, and I experimented with a bunch of different things but the thing that really stuck out was that I returned to my bass. As a 5 string, it normally goes BEADG, the B being the lowest, but I moved all my strings up a different way so that I could have it EADGC, with a high C at the bottom instead of the low B. I’ve stuck with that for a long time, but as I’ve gone through the years I’ve met this super incredible person named Grubby Bean, he’s a bass player himself and has always lent me basses to try and figure things out and we’d pick each other’s brains, but for one of my birthdays he got me this custom bass. This guy just basically picked apart and tooled together his own custom piece and it was stolen out of his dorm room when he was in college and he never saw it again and he never got to put a label on the top of the head. Whoever stole this thing pawned it, got nothing for it, and my buddy Grubby Bean, found it online somehow, super cheap cause nobody could really tell what it was, but he figured out what it was tracked the guy down, and got it for me and it’s my favorite bass I’ve ever owned.
