Can anyone give me advice on which of these would be more useful to a beginner as a learning tool? I want to be able to play through headphones and connect to my PC. I also want something with an integrated tuner. So these are the two devices that seem to fit the bill. Is anyone able to compair them and/or advise of a better option for a beginning bass player?

Zoom B2.1U vs Tascam GB-10

I playing along with CDs is your thing then the Tascam is the way to go, while not a stage worthy effects unit it is an awesome practice tool.
The Zoom would be better if you are interested in getting into effects and playing along with drum loops as the Zoom does not have a jam along feature (imo a major oversight).

I have been looking around more and it seems like some kind of pc interface may work just as well. What would offer the best supporting software for a complete beginner? I saw that guitarport seems to be geared to teaching, but they are shutting down and it looks to be more specific to guitar anyway. I know there is no substitute for practice. I need to learn music and familiarize myself with the bass at the same time, so I have a lot of work to do. I guess what I am looking for is tools that will help me learn, keep me on track and also be useful as I progress. I found some instructional software called eMedia Bass Method that looks good and I think I can use it with any interface. Any suggestions?
I have the zoom b2 and I also use the e-media program you mentioned. The b2 works with emedia threw head phones but the b2 is only a affects pedal. If you use tabs alot I would get the tascam for playing along with music.
Get the Tascam. GB 10. I own one and it's been the greatest thing for learning songs. Can't speak about the zoom. Or not that model at least. I have a Zoom B3.
But the Tascam is a great tool. You can change the card. And put as many songs as you want on. There.
Now The effects ain't great. I don't even use them. But for straight learning or teaching Yourself how to play. You can't go wrong for the price and ease of the GB 10.

You can carry the GB 10 anywhere ,with you. And play along. Granted their are PC things out there but the Tascam is no bigger than a tv remote. So it will fit In your case.
Just spend the $99 and you want regret it. Cause you won't ever outgrow it. No one would. Tuner and metronome included. So it's a good item to Have.
I can practice while everyone is asleep or wherever. Just use headphones and your bass.
I rarely even plug into my amp anymore. Until the other guys come over to practice.

Thanks for the responses! Will the GB-10 also work like a regular USB interface? If I use it on my computer can I also use an external DAC at the same time that is feeding my headphone amp?
The zoom b2.1u is definitely a good choice if you want to explore different bass sounds. rather if you're a beginner or and advanced bass player, the zoom b2.1u is n awesome multi-effects processor to own. the zoom b3 would be another good choice for a mulri-effects processor.
