“Accidental” NBD- Aerodyne Jazz

Accidental isn’t really the right word. I ordered this bass from Franklin Guitar Works in Texas. The guys who are selling them for $649 usd. Then I thought I shouldn’t spend the money, and I used the reverb “contact the seller” feature and asked them to cancel the order. This was on a Sunday, and I don’t think they got the message, because they shipped it Monday. So it’s here. I don’t intend to send it back.

The Fender box appeared to have never been opened, so it looks like I got a brand-new Fender bass for half the original price, but without the warranty.

I plugged it in, tuned it up, and turned it on. I would say it sounds sufficiently Jazz Bass -ish. “Case candy” consists of three Allen wrenches and a slip of paper showing how to adjust the Babicz bridge. Not sure if I’ll have to adjust it right away, but I’ll definitely have to tighten the truss rod a bit.

I’m capable of doing my own setups, but I do them slowly, over a period of days (at least). I played it today for a while, practicing for my upcoming gig with the cover band. I may have put slightly too much tension on the truss rod, it has a teensy of relief, but I’ll know more as I lower the strings. I watched a Stu Hamm video recently, and he said that fret rattle is part of his sound. It’s not part of mine, but I do like a low action. Within a week or so, it should be about right.

BTW, these also have Gotoh tuners, and come with instructions for adjusting them.

Just played a 2-nite stand this weekend. 1st night I played my Mod Shop custom Jazz for the entire evening. I love everything about that bass. It has D'Addario Nylon Tapes on it and it is amazing. I'm a flats kinda guy.

But last night I played the Aero Special Jazz with Fender Pure Nickel rounds. MAN! That is a SWEET bass!! It sounded SO GOOD with a really spanky but very "round" kind of sound. And it plays so nice. It is a bit of a departure from the traditional MIA Jazz in terms of everything about the neck but it really is a sweet player.
