Terrific example of an early and fairly uncommon G&L.

For those unfamiliar with this model, it features active electronics, unlike its passive cousin, the L2000. This allows for a wide pallet of tones.

The body has a few scuffs and light surface marks, but with an overall great appearance.

Weight: 10.9 lbs

Nut width: 1 11/16

Serial number: B0049XX, indicating made in 1981

Comes with a G&L case which likely is the original. The case has several scuffs and dings, but is fully functional (don't have the key).

I wish I knew where to look or how to tell what the wood is, but I don't.

No one is going to mistake this instrument for a feather, so probably whatever the heaviest wood G&L was using at the time.

I already have 2 G&L's but this is gorgeous.

Yep, all the earmarks of an '81. To my knowledge most of those bodies were ash or mahogany, consistent with the weight. I've heard talk of poplar (a little skeptical about that, though - it should be lighter). You can tell the difference if the neck is removed. I can believe it's the original case as well. It's identical (even the fur color) to my '80 L-1000 case which was purchased in early '81. Probably worth mentioning that the L2000e can be run in passive mode as well if desired, like most G&L's.

Thanks to everyone for their nice comments and encouragement.

I removed the neck, and the body appears to be ash. Please see the photos.

I examined the frets closely when the neck was off and they are in superb condition. Nothing needed here.

Finally, I see a small amount of superficial buckle rash that is visible only when the body is held at an angle.

Again, while not perfect, the finish is lustrous and gives an extremely nice impression.

Further information: The neck is smooth, with no marks or indentations I can see or feel. I turned the truss rod one turn in either direction (carefully, in 1/4 turn increments) and it moves freely.

Probably not Leo, as he very rarely spent much time in the wood shop. What is more than likely that George Fullerton would have given it the final inspection. George was also known to sometimes initial or sign under the neck pickup. Congratulations to the new owner...hope you don't live too close to any seismic fault lines!
