You'd think I would've learned this by now.....
As much as I LOVE to own basses like this for their unmatched playability, their modern tone and full range clarity....
I keep coming back to Fenders and fender-inspired 5's!!!
For me that means Sadowsky basses. I've owned 9 now, Metros and NYCs both, and I need to stop trading them away!!!
What brought this into focus was doing some back-to-back playing with this Smith and my 62' AVRI PBass with heavy flats. As far as comfort/playability and being able to play lyrically and more 'soloistic', the Smith won hands down. But as far as nailing that 'sound in my head', the PBass just DID IT for me. So then I got to thinking...."what's the name of that Roger guy that builds Fender-inspired 5 strings with great B strings again? Shadooski?"
Whew....now that the venting is over...
This is a special Smith, and my 3rd. I've owned a mahogany-cored BSREG6 and a Tiger maple-cored BSREG5 and to my ears there's something special going on with the walnut core and the cocobolo. More specifically this means MASSIVE low end when boosting the bass knob. The other contributors to the overall full sound of this bass, IMO, is it's girth. She weighs in at just under 13lbs but this feels very manageable with a comfortable strap.
More to post in the next few days, including my own pics and some sound clips. This bass is 10 years old and has been gigged. There's some dings in the finish here and there but overall the bass is in excellent shape. Comes with a Smith Hardshell case, prefer not to ship internationally if possible, and the only trades I'd be interested in would be either Sadowsky or Alleva Coppolo basses.
