Details

For sale is my 1993 Ernie Ball Music Man Stingray 4 with the 3 band EQ, bridge with mutes, and a rosewood fretboard. I bought this bass new and am its only owner.

The bass is in excellent condition. Stingrays from the early 1990s were wonderfully built, and this bass is a great example of the breed. The clear finish highlights the nicely figured wood body, and as you can see in the pictures, the back of the neck is highly figured maple, and looks fantastic. The original hardshell case is included with the bass. I just restrung it with a set of flat wound DR strings, as well.

The only blemishes are: 2 light stresses in the finish on the bottom of the instrument near the front of the control cover; a bit of tarnish on a few of the pickup poles, and; some light scratches to the rear-mounted chrome battery cover. The stresses in the finish and light tarnish are shown in close-up in one of the pictures, and the scratches in the rear chrome cover are too light to show up in pictures.

This Stingray was my first "serious" bass, and I got my first job to pay for it. In the 20+ years since then, this bass has been an absolute rock -- nothing's gone wrong and it still looks and feels great. I'm selling it because a physical disability restricts me to smaller, short-scale basses and narrower necks from now on. Otherwise, you can be sure I'd keep it, because they don't make 'em like this any more.

I don't have a digital scale, and am unable to provide an exact weight. That said, Stingrays are not known for being featherweights. On my extremely unsophisticated luggage scale this one clocked in at a hair over 9 1/2 lbs. But I repeat -- the scale is very, very far from laboratory grade.

This bass is for sale, not for trade. The ONLY possible exception is a swap for a Jerry Jones 4 string Longhorn Neptune -- not a Danelectro, not any other masonite bass. If you're not offering a Jerry Jones Longhorn Neptune, I'm not interested in a trade.

The Stingray is priced at $950 plus $50 for shipping in the continental US, and I'd be happy to answer any questions you have. Thank you.

What a beautiful neck!!!!

Thank you. The figuring on the neck is so deep, it almost has a 3D effect when you look at it in person. It's what drew me to the bass when I was a geeky 17 year-old sitting nervously in Sam Ash.

Early 90s Stingrays are incredible. Never should have gotten rid of my '91 SR5. This is a ridiculously good price on a beautiful bass!

GLWYS!

Thank you, as well, blindrabbit. I'm already feeling a twinge of regret about putting this bass up for sale. If I weren't disabled I'd keep it for sure. It looks great, plays like velvet, and the build quality is insane. Also, I've got 20+ years of happy memories wrapped up in it.

I have the exact same bass - same year, finish, everything - and it is killer! Great bass for that price. GLWTS!

Nice! The natural finish is really something on these early '90s EBMMs

This is absolutely beautiful.

Thank you, sir.

Looks fantastic! Good price too, especially with the OHSC.

liverbird, first off -- thanks for the kind words about the bass. Second, the case also contains some correspondence between Sam Ash and EBMM from 1993. I guess the bass was first delivered with a blemish, so it was sent back to EBMM and given a new body before being put on sale. The salesman was going to tear it up, but I was so excited to buy the bass that I stopped him and kept it in the case. I'm not sure why... but at this point, it's just a neat little piece to accompany the bass.

Yeah, I hear you Mr. A. I bought mine new too and gigged it heavily for a number of years, recorded an album with it...it held all sorts of memories for me. Then I started to think "its too heavy" (which it was), "I don't to play a 5 string anymore", and just generally was GASsing for other instruments...next thing you know it was traded away. Like yours, the build quality was impeccable, the neck was laden with incredible birdseye figuring...*sigh*. On the one hand, from a sentimental perspective its definitely a trade I'd undo now if I could, but also like you my back and shoulder just couldn't handle the weight anymore, so it would have become a glorified wall ornament, and its a bass that deserves to be played and loved. Tough choices here.

Bottom line is whomever buys this bass from you is getting a STEAL. Early 90s was a golden age for EBMM, IMO, and in the decades ahead we will recognize this to be the case more and more. It'll be like pre-CBS Fenders or something like that.

This is the exact bass that made me beg my mother for the same Stingray, same finish, bought at the same Sam Ash!!!
Bump for great bass, and great guy!

Thanks, Doctor_Clock!

Right after I bought the Stingray, I asked to try a Kubicki Factor (headless!) and a Hartke 4 x 10 cabinet (shiny speakers!). I was so excited I turned the amp/cab on before plugging in, and since the amp was maxed, when I tried to plug in, the whole store got blasted by clacking and feedback. In the silence that followed, one of the Sam Ash salesguys pointed at me and shouted, "BOO!" I was hugely embarrassed, which is hilarious, because only a sensitive teenager would care so much what a bunch of strangers in a music store thought of him.

C'mon, TB -- someone wants this bass.

Well, the bass is sold at the asking price.

Unfortunately, it went to a buyer on R****b, rather than on TB.com. I'd really hoped that someone on the board would buy it. To everyone who posted in this thread -- thank you. It was a nice send-off for a bass I've owned for 20+ years and gave me a chance to reminisce.
