Up for sale is my prized Drake Custom 32" P/J new lowered $1200 price is firm and includes case free shipping and Dunlop straplocks.

Not interested in any trades

From Andrew Drake:

"The bass was originally made for a customer who did not end up having the money for it. He had ordered a bass with a solid Mahogany body (very heavy),the larger tuners, and an old single coil pickup like the original Tele basses.

When he could not pay for it I tried to sell it but it was too heavy to get anyone to buy it. That is the problem when someone orders a bass with some goofy specs...no one else would ever want it.

I ended up planing off the top part of the body and laminating the figured Maple top she has now. She is chambered inside to reduce weight and give her a more round tone. I think she is great now and I wish I would have built her like that in the first place. Standard P/J tone with active EMG's ) Knobs are V-V-T?

The shorter scale gives a nice lo-mid range bite that does cut through the mix. You will still be able to get all the bassy tone too.

The shorter scale is basically a regular 34 (Fender standard scale) cut off at the first fret and the nut is then placed there.

I made that bass so that it has the same dimensions as a regular P bass. I added a couple frets to make the neck look normal and so the bridge ended up where it is. It has to be there to allow the bass to intonate correctly."

4 String Bass « Drake Custom Bass

I recently sent the bass back to Andrew for some upgrades:

From his website:

"This gem of a bass was built back in 2008 and finish in early 2009. She was built in my Des Moines shop and predated Drake Custom. Some background on this bass. This bass was originally a custom build for a customer who wanted a 32 inch scale P style bass. He had sent me some tuners and a single coil Duncan pickup to use on the build. The customer thought the bass too heavy (9 pounds) so the deal did not go through. I stripped the old pickup out and returned it to the customer as I did not like it. I then replaced it with a EMG DC35 pup. The bass had a decent sound but I still thought that it was too heavy so I planed off the top of the Mahogany body and replaced it with a Maple top wood after some chambering. I then routed for PJ pups that would give the bass some tonal flexibility. The bass was then sold. The second and third pictures are of the same bass.

Recently, her new owner asked me to inlay the headstock with a logo since the bass was made before June of 2010 when I started Drake Custom. I did the inlay work (well Rosie did it) and while we worked on the bass I started to see some things that I thought I could do better on. In 2009 I did not have the skills that I have now and I wanted to make this bass even more cool than it was. I removed the heavy tuners that made the neck heavy and replaced with Hipshot Ultralites. I then laminated the back of the headstock with Maple to hide the old screw holes. I reshaped the headstock and straightened the bridge as it was a little offset. I then dressed the frets and did a complete setup. I think her owner will be pleased with his new bass."

My reason for sale is I very recently bought "Kyle's Bass" also a Drake custom.

I agree, I am surprised at the lack of interest in this bass. Here you have a custom build by a renowned luthier who not only has built a fine homage to a classic American bass, but then improved it with a masterfully beautiful chambered mahogany body, easy playing 32 inch scale, maple neck and top, hand applied finishes and meticulous set up and build quality. Then still dis-satisfied with the first result, knowing he could build an even better custom instrument, he then modified the initial concept bass with upgraded pickups and tuners and dressed the frets, all high-touch quality features from a bass player himself, that leave the stock big box store offerings in the dust! Here you have a once in a lifetime opportunity to own an American, custom hand-made luthier build at way below replacement cost and at highly competitive pricing point hundred's less than a factory bass guitar built to achieve the corporate goals of standardized low-cost production and economies of scale. My only reason for selling this masterpiece, is that I bough another custom Drake bass, "Kyles Bass."

Misc. note: I see that this bass has 22 frets. I like that because it lets you go up and grab that funky Dm7 chord, straight across, and... I really like that chord. My being used to playing basses with 22 frets probably plays some part in my preference as well. Not that I wouldn't play a bass with 21 frets - I would, but every time I see one I like, I wish it had one fret more!

Reasonable offers will be considered. Starting to accumulate too many basses. Weekend bump

I have owned several of Andrew Drake's basses, still have three, and he is just starting a five string fretless for me, which will be our winter project. Andrew and I live about 70 miles apart and see each other often. Point being, I have seen everything he has built since 2010 and played most of them as he is checking quality control and playability before he adds the finishing touches. His work is superb. Second to none. There is no bass Andrew has built that I haven't liked.

I also know jlaudin....Jeff, having bought a very nice CB bass from him about a year ago. Jeff is a great guy and a great TBer. Very honest and straight forward. He does what he says he will do.

If I had a spot for another 4 string bass, this one would be coming back to Iowa.

Bottom line is, here is a chance to own a great Drake Custom 32" inch scale bass at about half the cost to build it new today, plus deal with a first class guy, who will treat you right.

Deal here with confidence. You won't be disappointed.
