Changes in my personal and professional life force me to cut down the bass collection a bit more. I overindulged on a '66 Jazz last year and need to sell another bass to balance the gear budget a bit.

It's really breaking my heart to let this go, but I'm not playing it as much as my '66 Jazz. Once this is sold, I'll be down to just my Jazz and a Yamaha PBass.

Well, here it is...

You're looking at a vintage '69 Les Paul Bass. This is the original version made in '69 and early '70 before they switched to the more common "Triumph" bass. Honduran mahogany body and 1-piece neck. Brazilian rosewood fingerboard. Early 2-post bridge with functional string mute and ashtray cover.

Beautifully worn in. Extensive weather checking. Everything is 100% functional. The bass was gone over by one of the most respected bass techs in NYC: Darrel Gilbert of the ESP and Gibson Custom Shops. He ensured the neck was straight, adjusted the truss rod, leveled/dressed the frets, adjusted the bridge mount (the 2-points can be fussy), and rebuilt the string mute. I paid $1900 for the bass and another $400 for Darrel's work.

Les Paul Basses (and especially Triumphs) are notoriously heavy. This one is not. Don't get me wrong...it's not a featherweight. But it's nothing like the boat anchor most of these are. It balances perfectly on the leg without any neck- or body-dive. This was a bucket-list bass for me and it took 2 decades for me to find the right example. This is it. If you're looking for one of these, you will NOT find a better example anywhere at any price.

The bass was recently featured on No Treble: Old School: 1969 Gibson Les Paul Bass

I'm asking just $1675 shipped/PayPal'ed for quick sale. I may entertain reasonable offers, especially if there's a local sale. The bass comes with a non-original gigbag.

Are the body and neck each built from one piece of mahogany? I have a 1968 Les Paul Custom with those features that is also a roadworn musical soldier.

What a neat instrument! I'll bet the neck is wonderful.
Great aesthetic in describing and displaying this piece of history.

Just in case anyone didn't know it, the designer of this bass, Les Paul, invented (along with some others) the solid body electric guitar and also invented sound on sound recording (recording one track, then recording and layering another track on top of it). He was the Thomas Edison of music.

The neck is a single piece of mahogany. The body is a funny thing. It's a two-piece...but not split down the middle. It's a "pancake" body: two huge pieces of mahogany (carved top and flat back) glued together like a sandwich.

Those are great guitars. I'd love to get my hands on a '68 goldtop.

Well, these pics shame the majority of those found on this site, although there are some lovely exceptions.

GLWS - what an interesting bass.
