Details

I’ve decided to put the last of my bass guitars back on the market to find a new home.

This one is a Tobias Classic 4 string that I got back in 92 while I was going to school in Golden, Colorado. It’s serial number 524. I’d been a long time Fender guy, and was looking for a bass with a different sonic character. I played her in church for a while, and then transitioned her to my main home studio bass. Fantastic sustain, intonation and sounds really good with smaller ensembles, and fantastic with a piano. It has a 5 piece asymmetric neck (looks like Birdseye maple, walnut, and purpleheart), dual truss rods, and a three-piece body.

The bass is in excellent condition, and has been very reliable. They only service it’s had was for a dirty pot back in ‘96. I had that fixed down at a repair shop in Berkeley CA, and other than that it’s been trouble free and never let me down.

I had this same bass I posted back in ’12 along with my Sadowsky. The NYC went to a really cool LA local musician, and I took the Classic off the market thinking I may start playing it again. Well, it’s been in the safe for four years now, and its time to get it out there in the hands of someone who will play it.

Asking price is $2600 plus shipping in the CONUS

Sorry, no trades since I’m not playing anymore.

I'm interested in the Tobias. What would be a good way to talk to you about it?

Guys,
I've been out on a business trip, so just getting back to the forum and questions.

Regarding the controls, its an older Bartolini design with a stacked EQ setup. It you check out some of the earlier Tobias BGs you'll see this layout. Also, the Bartolini website has some wiring diagrams that show this stacked pot configuration, but I did see this exact layout. I'm just not sure when the transition to the non-stacked design took place, but maybe one of the Tobias connosoures could chime in with more details. From a players standpoint, my experience was that this setup took some getting use to when your out gigging, especially for an old Fender guy like me who's use to simple controls.

I also had a question about the woods. The most important thing to know is the fingerboard is Pau Ferro. I would characterize the sonics as mid range, not dull but shy of the brightness that you'd expect from ebony. The rest of the five piece neck is symmetric bands of maple, walnut and a middle band of purpleheart. The wings look like ash and a walnut top.

I'll get back to all the PMs later today. Thanks for everyone's interest in the instrument and I hope to find a new home for her soon.
